LIFTING JACK.
Patented Feb. 24, 1885.

WITNESSES THOMAS MAXON, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOB OF ONEHALF TO JAMES WV. CARPENTER, OF SAME PLACE.
LlFTlNG-JACKI SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 312,878, dated February 24:, 1885.
Application filed September 1884. (No model.)
To (LZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS MAXoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved liftingjack. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pawhframe and its recessed ring. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the screw-threaded nut detached, showing its recesses; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the,
recessed ring detached.
This invention relates to lifting-jacks; and it consists in certain novel devices whereby the screw can be conveniently turned either to the right or left by simply vibrating the handle of the jack, and also whereby the parts can be made very substantial and durable and easily lubricated, as will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
A designates the body or pedestal of the lifting-jack. and B the foot or base thereof, which is preferably made of two vertical halves bolted together, and adapted at its upper end to receive a hardenedsteel washer, .T. (Shown in sectionin Fig.1.) On top ofthe washer J is mounted a cylindrical nut, 13, which is interiorly screw-threaded, and con structed with an annular shoulder, Z), and also with a series of recesses, 0, above said shoulder, for a purpose hereinafter explained. Surrounding the nut B is a collar, H, on which is a flanged ring, I, the flange of which bears upon the shoulder b. Thislring I is rigidly secured to the nut B by a screw.
E designates the ratchet-frame which receives the upper end of the nut B, and which is constructed with a socketed portion, E, and also with a hole through it, through which passes the jack-screw O, which is tapped through the nut B, and constructed with a horizontal lifting-foot, O, on its lower end, which is movable in a slot, A, made through the pedestal A, as shown in Fig. 1. On the upper end of the screw 0 is secured ahead, D.
The pawl-frame. E is recessed to receive two pawls, G G, which are pivoted to this frame at g g, and constructed with tails g 9. (Shown in Fig. 2.)
F designates a movable ring provided with a handle, f, and adapted to embrace the socketed shank E, and, when desired, to hold either one or both of the pawls free from the nut B. Between the tails of the pawls is a spring, S, the object of which is to cause the pawls to engage in recess 0 of the nut.
The ring F is constructed with a notch, f,'
opposite the handlef, the object of which is to allow either one of the pawls, but not both, to engage with the nut B, according to the direction it is desired to turn the screw 0. The ring F is freely movable about the shank E, for adjusting the pawls, as described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a liftingack, the combination of a shouldered nut provided with recesses with a ratchetframe provided with spring-actuated pawls, said frame resting on a flanged ring on theshoulder of the nut, and surrounding and covering the recessed portion, the whole surrounding a jack-screw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A right and left ratchet-frame for lifting-jacks, having spring-actuated pawls, and a retainingring notched on one side, so as to disengage only one of the pawls at one time, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A lifting-jack consisting of a standard supporting a shouldered nut provided with recesses and surrounded by a collar and a flanged ring, and resting on a washer, a ratchet-frame surrounding and covering the recessed part of the nut, and provided with spring-actuated pawls, and a notched retaining-ring, and a jack-screw, all the parts operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS MAXON.
