Definitions
- This lifting-jack is especially intended for replacing railway-cars but may be used for lifting any article that requires to be moved along after lifting.
- My invention consists in the combination, with two screws with right and left hand threads and a tubular nut, of two wheel-segments, forming the bearings at the ends of the screws, so that, after the car or other article has been raised, it may be rolled along upon such wheel-segments a greater distance than heretofore usual in liftingjacks, and without the exercise of much power, and without the article descending appreciably as it is moved.
- Figure 1 is a vertical section of said screw-jack
- Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
- the screws or and b are made with right and left hand threads and the sleeve 0 is around these screws, and provided with lugs d or openings, by means of which the sleeve can be turned by a lever or wrench, and screw the screws a and b apart, and raise or move the article against which the jack is placed. The reverse movement draws the screws together.
- the end bearings of the screws a b are made as wheel-segments f andg (described from near the center of the jack) when the screws are projected about half-way, so that this jack can be used to raise a car or other article, and to roll it along horizontally to the extent permissible by the wheel-segments.
- This jack may be applied to any lifting purposes to which it is available.
Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LIVINGSTONE, OF VALLEY STREAM, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND H. A. ROGERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,791, dated May 25, 1875; application filed April 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM LIVINGSTONE, of Valley Stream, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification v This lifting-jack is especially intended for replacing railway-cars but may be used for lifting any article that requires to be moved along after lifting.
My invention consists in the combination, with two screws with right and left hand threads and a tubular nut, of two wheel-segments, forming the bearings at the ends of the screws, so that, after the car or other article has been raised, it may be rolled along upon such wheel-segments a greater distance than heretofore usual in liftingjacks, and without the exercise of much power, and without the article descending appreciably as it is moved.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of said screw-jack, and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
The screws or and b are made with right and left hand threads and the sleeve 0 is around these screws, and provided with lugs d or openings, by means of which the sleeve can be turned by a lever or wrench, and screw the screws a and b apart, and raise or move the article against which the jack is placed. The reverse movement draws the screws together. The end bearings of the screws a b are made as wheel-segments f andg (described from near the center of the jack) when the screws are projected about half-way, so that this jack can be used to raise a car or other article, and to roll it along horizontally to the extent permissible by the wheel-segments.
This jack may be applied to any lifting purposes to which it is available.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the right and left hand screws and tubular nut, of the wheel-segments, forming bearings at the ends of the screws, for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 27th day of April, A. l).
WILLIAM LIVINGSTONE. Witnesses:
GEO. T. PINOKNEY, CHAS. E. SMITH.
