Be it known that I, EDWARD M. HULT- QUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookhaven, in the county of Lincoln and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I/Vashboards, of which the following is a specification.

This invention embodies a novel attaching device designed to be applied particularly to a washboard in order to firmly support such board in proper position in a tub or similar receptacle, permitting the operator or one washing the clothes to have free use of both hands.

The essential feature of the invention resides in the general simplicity of the attaching device, whereby the same may be manufactured cheaply and whereby the substantiality of the article is greatly subserved.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details-of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, showing it applied to a portion of a tub. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the wire support.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the washboard, and the numeral 3 the side bars thereof. The attaching device for supporting the washboard in the tub consists mainly of spaced vertically-arranged supporting members 2, the upper ends of which are formed with lateral points to be embedded in the side bars 3 of the washboard 1, hooks i being formed adjacent to the upper extremities of the members 2, so as to overlap or engage over the rim portion of the tub in the actual use of the invention. Extending from the lower ends of the members 2 are braces 5 and 6, the latter projecting laterally from the members 2 and having points at the outer ends to be embedded in the bars 3, and thereby firmly connect the attaching device to the washboard. The braces 5 are diagonally arranged, each extending from the lower ends of one of the members 2 to a point adjacent to the front end portion of the op posite brace 6. The braces 5 therefore cross each other at a point'intermediate of their ends, and said braces 5, as well as the braces 6, are preferably offset near the outermost extremities, as shown at 8, said offset portions limiting the penetration of the points of the braces with respect to the bars 3 of the washboard.

In the preferred construction of the invention and in order to materially cheapen the attaching device so far as cost of manufacture is concerned said device is preferably made from wire of suitable gage to lend the requisite substantiality. The members 2 are bent outwardly at their upper ends to form the hooks 4, and the braces 5 extend diagonally from the members 2, being integral therewith and constituting extensions or bent portions of said members 2. The braces 6 likewise are of wire, and the inner ends of said braces are attached to the members 2 by twisting such ends about the lower portions of said parts 2.

In operation the loops i are hooked upon the top of the tub and the parts 2 allowed to engage the inside of the tub. The washboard is then held sccurelyin position, so that the operator is free to use both hands, and the bottom of the tub is not obstructed by the legs of the washboard, as is commonly the case.

Having thus described the .invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a washboard and an attaching device therefor designed to support the board in a receptacle, said attaching device comprising spaced supporting members secured at their upper ends to the washboard, hooks adjacent to the upper ends of the members aforesaid to engage over the tub as specified, lateral braces extending from the lower ends of said spaced supporting members and affixed at their outer ends to the washboard, and other braces integral with the spaced supporting members and secured at one end to the washboard to hold said spaced supporting members rigidly in position.

In combination, a washboard and an attaching device therefor designed to support the board in a receptacle, said attaching device comprising spaced vertical supporting members having the upper extremities thereof secured to the washboard, hooks adjacent to the upper extremities of the members aforesaid, a lateral brace extending from the lower end of each vertical supporting mem ber and having a point at its outer end embedded in the washboard, and a diagonal brace extending from the lower end of each vertical supporting member and terminating in a point adjacent to the opposite lateral brace, the diagonal braces crossing each other at a point intermediate of their ends and having the points at their outer extremities embedded in the washboard.

In combination, a washboard and an attaching device therefor designed to support the board in a receptacle, said attaching device comprising spaced vertical members bent rearwardly at their upper end portions to form hooks and provided with points at the upper extremities embedded in opposite side portions of the washboard, a lateral brace extending from the lower end of each supporting member and consisting of a piece of wire having its inner end twisted about the lower portion of its supporting member, the

outer end of said brace being offset and pointed and embedded in a side of the washboard, each vertical supporting member being made from a length of Wire and having its lower extremity bent diagonally therefrom and terminating in a point near the outer end of the opposite lateral brace, the diagonal portions of the supporting members constituting diagonal braces crossing one another intermediate of their ends and having the points at their outer extremities embedded in the washboard adjacent to the points of the lateral braces. 4
