CHEGKRE lN-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3. 1906.
Application filed May 25,1905. Serial No. 262.218.
To all whom, it out concern:
Be it known that I, HANS A. MIKKELsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granite Falls, in the county of Yellow Medicine and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Checkrein-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to checkrein-hooks, and has for its object to improve and simplify the construction and increase the efficiency of devices of this class.
WVith these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which corresponding parts are denoted by like designating characters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the invention is not necessarilylimited thereto, as various changes in the shape, proportions, and general assemblage of the parts may be resorted to without departingfrom the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device as employed for an overcheck-rein, and Fig.2 is a longitudinal side elevation of the structure as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating the form employed for an ordi nary side-strap checkrein. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 3.
The improved device comprises a base portion 10, having means, such as a threaded stud 11, for fastening to the saddle or back-pad portion of the harness (represented at 12) and with spaced sides 13 14 and a transverse stop 15 when required, as shown in Fig. 2, the base portion having a recess 16 therein between the side members, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
Pivoted at 17 between the sides 13 14 is a member 18, forming a closure to the space between the sides and bearing upon the stop 15 when closed, as shown in Fig. 2. Depending from the closure member 18 is a tongue 19, adapted to engage the recess 16 and bear against the shoulder 16 when the closure member is in its downward position,
5 as in Figs. 2 and 4.
The form of the improved structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2 will be employed when applied to a harness having an overdraftcheckrein which is composed of a single strap, as at 21, having an aperture 22 near one end and presented flatwise to the holding device, as in Fig. 1. The length of the tongue 19 in this form of the structure is comparatively short, as the area required for the entrance of the flat strap is small, as will be obvious.
When the device is employed upon harness using the ordinary side-strap check, with the checkrein passing along the sides of the animals head and folded together centrally over the back, as at 23, the folded strap is presented edgewise to the check-hook, as in Fig. 3. Hence the tongue 19 in this form of the structure is necessarily longer than when the overcheck is used, as illustrated in Fig. 4 but it will be obvious that either form may be employed without affecting the principle of the invention, as the same structural elements are employed in each and produce the same results.
When the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is employed, the transverse stop 15 will preferably be employed to limit the movement of the flat strap 21, so that its aperture will not be carried beyond the path of the tongue 19; but when the form of structure shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is employed the stop may be dispensed-with, as it will not be necessary to limit the movement of the folded strap in the same manner as with the overcheck-rein, as will be obvious.
The outer surfaces of the side members 13 14 and closure member 18 will be rounded and merged into a semiglobular form, so that no obstructions are presented when the device is in operative position to engage the driving-reins or other parts of the harness.
The device is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and may be readily applied to any of the various forms of harness in common use and may be applied without change to the harness when first manufactured or as readily applied to old harness by merely removing the check-hooks thereon and replacing them with the improved device.
Having thus is claimed is- 1. A checkrein-hook comprising a support provided with spaced side walls, and a reindescribed the invention, what IIO engaging member pivotally mounted for swinging movement between the side walls and provided with angularly-disposed arms one of which is adapted to engage the checkrein and the other extends parallel with and between the side walls to form a closure for the support.
2. A checkrein-hook comprising a support provided with spaced side walls and having a recess formed in the base thereof defining a shoulder, and rein-engaging member pivots ally mounted for swinging movement between the side walls and provided with angularly-disposed arms one of which is adapted to engage the shoulder and the other ex.- tends parallel with and between the side walls to form a housing for the base of the support.
3. A checkrein-hook comprising a support pro vided with spaced side walls connected by a transverse lug, and a rein-engaging member pivotally mounted for swinging movement between the side walls and provided with angularly-disposed arms one of which is adapted to engage the checkrein and the other extends between the side Walls for engagement with the lug to form a housing for the su port.
4. i5 checkrein-hook comprising a support provided with spaced side walls and having a recess formed in the base thereof defining a shoulder, a lug projecting vertically from one end of the base, and a rein-engaging member pivotally mounted for swinging movement between the side walls and provided with an gularly-disposed arms one of which is adapted to engage the checkrein, the other arm eX- tending between the side walls for engagement With the lug and having its upper surface disposed flush with the free ends of said side walls.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HANS A. MIKKELSON.
