Description

PATBNTED JUNE 19, 1906.
s. s. MYERS. HANGER FOR SMOKE BELLS."
APPLICATION FILED APR. 2, 1908.
ANDREW. a. 04mm! co. PMOTo-LITMGRAHMI, wmunmmq m a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANGER Fon SMOKE-BELLS;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1906.
Application filed April 2, 1906. Serial No. 309,326.
To It whom it may concern.-
Be' it known that I, SIRWELL S. MYERS, a
citizen of theUnited States of America, re-
siding at Swissvale, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Smoke-Bells, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to certain new and useful im rovements in hangers for smokebells; an the invention has for its primary object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and easily-constructed device for catching and retaining the smoke or unconsumed particles of a flame, thereby preventing the discoloring of wall-paper or contamination of the air within a compartment.
Another object of this invention is to provide a useful attachment for chandeliers and gas-fixtures which may be easily and quickly adjusted to any position for the purpose of shading the direct rays of a light within a room, the attachment also being adapted to be used for supporting various kinds of shades or ornaments that may be used in connection with a chandelier or similar fixture.
Briefly described, my improved attachment comprises a plurality of radially-disposed arms which are detachably connected to the standard or central stem of a chandelier, the ends of the arms being provided with adjustable hook shaped supporters from which smoke-bells, shades, or globes may be supported.
The above construction, together with other details of my invention, will be hereinafter more fully described and then specific-.
ally pointed out the claims, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a chandelier equipped with my improved hanger: or attachment. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of an adjustable part of the same. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the hanger or attachment. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one .of the hook-shaped supporters of the attachment.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a conventional form of threeburner chandelier comprising a central stem or standard 1, having three radially-disposed branch pipes 2, which support burners 3, the burners being of aconventional form having globes 4. My invention resides in providing the stem or standard 1 with a hanger or attachment which in the present instance con' sists of three radially-disposed metallic arms 5, said arms being constructed of strips of material slightlybent and then twisted, as at 6, .to present a neat and attractive appearance. The inner ends of the arms are curved, as at .7 whereby the curved ends of the arms when assembled will form a band or ring to surround the standard or stem 1 of the chandelier. The curved ends of the arms are recessed, as atg8, and bent, as at 9, whereby the adjoining; arm' end willfit within its associate arms and form a band or ring, the parts of the ring or band being secured together by set-screws 10. I
The outer ends of the arms 5 are bent upwardly, as at 11, and provided with openings 12 to receive hook-shaped supporters 14, the outer ends of said supporters conforming to a hook 15, while the inner ends are provided with straps 16, which surround the arms 5 and guide the supporters in their movement upon said arms. Each strap is provided with a set-screw 17, whereby after the hookshaped supporters 14 have been adjusted the supporters can be vfixed relative to the ends of the arms 5.
The hook-shaped supporters are adapted to support smoke-bells 18 of a conventional form or shades, globes, or like articles which will tend to shield the ceiling of a compartment from the products of combustion thrown ofi by the flame of the burners 3. The smoke-bells 18 are adapted to prevent the discoloring of a ceiling or wall within the collar 1*, as shown in Fig. 1, on which the ring of the hanger will rest, or, as shown in v.
Fig. 3, set-screws 2, extending through threaded openings in the "curved ends 7 of the arms, may be employed to secure the hanger upon the standard.
My improved hanger attachment is con- IIO without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. In a hanger or attachment, the combina tion with the standard or stem of a chandelier, of curved arms, the ends of said arms being curved and recessed to fit together to form a band to surround said standard or stem, hook-shaped supporters slidably mounted upon the opposite ends of said arms, means to fix said supporters relative to said arms, and means to secure the curved ends of said arms together around said stem or standard, substantially as described.
2. A hanger embodying radially-disposed curved arms, the ends of said arms being curved and recessed to fit together to form a band or ring, hook-shaped supporters adjustably mounted upon the opposite ends of said arms, and means to secure the curved ends of said arms together to form a band or ring, substantially as described.
3. A hanger comprising radially-disposed arms, the inner ends of which are curved and recessed to adapt them to fit together to form a ring, means for securing the curved ends together, and supporters adjustably secured to the outer ends of said arms,
4. A hanger comprising a plurality of radially-disposed arms, the inner ends of which are curved and recessed to adapt them to fit together to form a band or ring, means for securing the curved arms together, and supports at the outer ends of said arms.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SIRWELL S. MYERS.
