ERASER.
Spec-cation of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1906.
Application iled February 28, 1906. Serial No. 303.348.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. BURRows, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in erasers; and the invention relates more particularly to typewriter erasers wherein a hard piece of rubber, isliilh as sand-rubber, is employed for erasing Figure 1 is a side elevation of an eraser conf structed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of an eraser embodying my invention, showing a modified form of construction in which the eraser proper is detachably secured. Fig. 4 is an edge view-of the same, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view thereof.
My invention relates particularly to that form of erasers which are peculiarly adapted for use in connection with the erasure of t ewritten matter and in which the ruhiger member or eraser proper is secured in a holder, the said rubber member or eraser generally being in the form of a circular member or disk rotatably mounted in the holder, so
' that the entire periphery of .the said rubber member or eraser proper may be presented for use in erasing.
In the illustration of my invention I have used that form of holder in which the rubber member or eraser proper, 1, is carried on a rivet 3, that is mounted in cheek-pieces 2of the holder, the said cheek-pieces of the eraser holder or support in this type of construction havin generally bound in their free end a plurality of bristles to form a brush 4. It is the usual practice in this type of eraser to serrate the free ends of the metal cheekpieces, as shown at 5, so as to firmly hold the ristles and rivet the said cheek-pieces together, as at 6, near their free end to bind `5 the holder for the eraser memberis of the in Figs. 1 and 2. By this construction I am enabled to renew the eraser member when necessary.
The specific type of eraser which I have improved is commonly known as the Eberhard Faber Comet Eraser No. 1087 but it is obvious that my improvement can be readily used in connection with the ordinary type of disk eraser wherein the depending supports or shields 2 and the brush 4 are dispensed with. My invention simply resides in bending the supports or shields 2 outwardly, as illustrated, whereby shields and supports will be provided for thefingers of a person using the eraser, said shields and supports also preventing the praper upon which the erasure is being made f om being smeared or injured by the persons fingers contacting with the pa er. 'Ihe construction of the shields 7 7 also engthens the life of the eraser and permits of practically the entire disk heilig used before the eraser in its entirety is discarded. IIeretofore it was only possible to use the eraser-disk until it had reached the supports or shields 2 at which time it was necessary to discard the eraser. In connection with the eraser shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the body portion of the eraser could be retained by insertin(r a new eraserdisk, and it will be observed that my improvement does not interfere with the removal of the disk through the medium of the screw 9 of said eraser.
Aparticular feature of myinvention resides in the simplicity which does not necessitate an additional expenditure in the manufacturin of the erasers, as when the supports or shields 2 2 are being stamped the shields 7 7 can be simultaneously bent to the shape shown in the drawings.
I do not care to confine myself` to any specie type of eraser or to the material from which the same is made. Such changes in the size and minor details them against the bristles. My invention reof construction as are permissible by the ap- 105 5o sides in forming the other ends of the cheekpended claims may be resorted to without pieces so as to produce finger-shields 7, this departing from the spirit and scope ofthe ineing accomplished by bending outwardly vention.
the part of the cheek-pieces, as shown, so What I claim, and desire to secure by Iletthat they lie at right angles to the remainder ters Patent, isr io 5 5 of the cheek-pieces. 1. In an eraser, the combination with sup- In the construction shown in Figs. 3, 4, Aand ports or shields, of a disk eraser journaled/bel 757 l eraser, and having their edges bent outwardly to form shields, substantially as described.
5. An eraser comprising a holder embody ing cheek-pieces, an eraser member rotatably 'f mounted between the cheek-pieces, and iinzo ger-shields carried by said cheek-pieces and extending outwardly at right angles thereto.
6. As a new article of manufacture, an eraser, comprising a flat eraser member, an eraser-member holder, embodying two sepa- 25 rate spaced cheek-pieces between which the eraser member is held, and finger-shields carl )a 7 ried by the cheek-pieces extending at right angles thereto. @d In testimony whereof I'a-Hix my signature 3d in the presence of two witnesses.
