Description

r Np. 823.667
h PATENTBD mums), 1-906. 'H. B. OHILDRESS.
' PIPE GRAPPIQE OR PULL-ER.
APPLIQATION FILED JULY 7, 1905.
, I whine-7 STA S WEN OFFICE HOLLIS B. OHILDRESS, OF GRANITE, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
' PIPE GRAPPLE OR FULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
,Patented. June 19, 1906.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HoLLIs B. OHILDREss, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Granite, in the county of Greer and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe Grapples or Pullers, of which the following is a specificawhich are concave on their inner sides, said 7 curvatures being provided with a roughened surface or corrugations which will securely hold the ipe or casing when applied.
A furt er object is to provide gripping jaws pivotally attached to sliding pieces which are capable of adjustment toward orfrom each other whereby they may be readily fitted to any size pipe or casing used in plumbing.
A still further object is to provide grippingbars which by their shape will. resume a released osition as soon as the pull is lessened and which when equipped with block and tackle will serve as a means for uplifting a pipe, stake, or casing by a series of repeated operations.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, more fully hereinafter described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the princip es of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of one of the sliding pieces with one of the grippingjaws ivoted thereto.
Re erring to the drawings by reference-numerals, similar numerals designate similar parts in the different figures.
1 designates a strong metallic frame having on both its sides outwardly-bulging portions 2, adapted to conform to the curvature of the stake, pi e, or casing to which it is applied. Said si es of frame are'also provided with fourlon 'tudinal slots (designated in the drawings y numeral 3) located at the four plane surfaces between the bulgings and the ends of the frame. Within these longitudinal slots slide the bearings 4, on which pivot the gri ping-arms 5 and sliding pieces 9, which are y means of these slots capable of being adjusted toward or from each other, whereby they may be readily fitted to any slze pipe or casing, said adjustment being regulated and made secure by set-screws, (designated by numeral 6.)
The gripping-bars 5 have their lower portions cut away on either side, as shown by numeral 7, which permits them to move freely in the recessed portions 8 of the sliding pieces 9. Cutting away the lower sides of grip ingbars 5 forms on said gripping-bars shou ders (designated by numeral 10) which serve as lugs against the upper edges of the frame and prevent the gripping-bars 5 from falling too ar to the sides. Above these shoulders and for nearly their entire length the grippingbars 5 have their inner sides of concave formation on which I have made corrugations or teeth 11, which slant upward, said teeth or corrugations beingldesigned to act as a grip or preventive to t e possible slip in of the pipe or stake while it is being pulfed om its position.
I have stated in theipreceding part of this specification that my invention is to be equipped with block-and-tackle a paratus; but do not care to limit myself to that specific aid, as the structure of my invention is such that it can be as usefully applied in conjunction with a lifting-jack for such purposes as pulling tent stay-pegs and the like from the ground.
,From the foregoing description, taken in connection with t e accompanying drawings, the construction and means of operation of the invention will be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions, and
minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from or sacrificing any of its advanta es.
aving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A grapple comprising a frame, fulcrumblocks adj ustably mounted within the frame,
arms pivotally mounted on said fulcrumblocks, and means whereby the fulcrum-- blocks may be relatively adjusted.
2. A grapple comprising a-frame provided with an elongated openingIan arm having its 2 or v v ,5
pivot-pin adjustably mounted Within said engage'their shoulders and prevent the arms opening, a member carried by said pivot-pin, from falling too far to the sides. and means engaging said member whereby to In testimony whereof I afiix my signature adjust the pivot of said arm. in presence of two Witnesses.
3. In the combination of a frame, grapple- HOLLIS B. CHILDRESS. arms having conoaved active faces and pro- Witnesses: vided With shoulders, sliding mounts for ad- W. O. J OHNSON, justi'ng the said grapple-arms and adapted to T. N. WI-IITEHURST.
