DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 12, 1906.
Application filed July 25, 1905. Serial No. 271,194.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, FRE-D HUMPHREYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stuart, in the county of Holt, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Equalizers and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and` use the same.
This invention relates to draft-equalizers, and has for its object to embody the invention in the nature of an attachment for convenient application to a tongue or draft-pole, it being particularly constructed for use in connection with mowers.
With this object in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details ma be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
In the drawin s, Figure l is a plan view of a tongue equipped with the draft-equalizer of the present invention Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken through the tongue and the attachment. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the structure shown 1n Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each and every figure of t e drawings.
As hereinbefore indicated, the present invention is in the nature of an attachment, and is particularly designed for pivotally supporting an evener-bar at one side of the tongue; and it consists of a block or body lof suitable proportions-say fourteen inches long and four inches square. This block or body is provided at its forward end with a clevis or substantially U-shaped link 2, which straddles the body and is pivotally connected thereto, as at 3, said link being designed to be slipped upon the tongue or pole 4 from the forward end thereof, so as to hold the front of the device to the pole in a simple and eflicient manner and at the same time permit of the convenient shifting of the body longitudinally of the pole. A suitable fastening 5, preferably a bolt, pierces the rear end portion of the body and is also designed to be set through the pole when the device has been adjusted to the desired position, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. It will here be explained that the attachment is placed against one of the upright sides of the pole and is provided upon its under side with a substantially U-shaped cli or bracket 6, which opens forwardly. Abrace-rod 7 is secured to the rear end of the clip 6 and is designed for connection with the outer end of the sickle-bar of the mower.
Any ordinary or preferred form of evenerbar may be pivotally supported within the clip 6 in the usual manner to lie beneath the tongue or pole and with its pivotal support located at one side thereof. A whiffletree or other single draft connection may be pro vided upon one end of the evener-bar, and a suitable doubletree provided upon the other end of the bar, the single draft connection of course being applied to the longer end portion of the evener-bar.
From the foregoin description it will be understood that the ody 1 the llink 2, the fastening 5, and the clip 6 constitute the attachment of the present invention, and said attachment is complete in itself and may be readily fitted to any ordinary draft tongue or pole without change or alteration therein, it merely being necessary to provide a single opening for the reception of the fastening 5. While the evener-bar and the draft connections of course cooperate with the attachment, they may be materially varied in form from that illustrated in the drawings, as their details of construction are non-essential to the invention.
The particular advantage of the present invention resides in the convenient manner whereby the attachment may be fitted to a draft tongue or pole, so as to rovide a fulcrum-point for the evener-bar ocated at one side of the draft-pole without requiring a complicated built-up structure to effect this object.
What is claimed isl. The combination with a draft-pole, of an evener-bar support, consisting of a body applied to one of the upright sides of the po e, a yoke pivotally embracing the body and frictionally embracing the pole, a fastening piercing the body and the pole, and an evener-bar fulcrumed upon the body at one side of the pole.
2. An evener-bar support for draft-poles comprising a body, a yoke-shaped link plvot- IOO IIO
ally embracing one end of the body, a fastening piercing the other end of the body for engagement with the drat-pole7 and a fulcrumupport for an eVener-bar carried by the 3. An eVener-bar support for draft-poles comprising a body, a yoke-shaped link pivotally embracing one end of the body for frictionally embracing a pole, a fastening carried by the other end of tlie body for engagement l with the pole, and a substantially U-sliaped clip carried by the under side of the body and constituting a fulcrum support for the eVener-bar.
4. An eVener-bar support for draft-poles comprising a body, means carried by opposite ends of the body for connection with the draft-pole, a fulcrum-support for an evenerbar carried by the body between the fastening means, and a brace member carried by the fulcrum-support 5. An eVener-bar support for draft-poles comprising a body, a yoke-shaped link pivotally embracing the front end of the body for rictionally embracing a pole, a fastening piercing the rear end of the body for engagement with the pole, a substantially U-shaped clip secured to the under side of the body for the support of the eVener-bar, and a sicklebar brace carried by and extending rearwardly from the clip.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED HUMPHREYS.
