PATENT OFFroE.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
$PEG1FICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 727,853,dated May 12, 1 903. Application filed February 28, 1903. Serial No. 145,579. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. SHELL, a citizen of the UnitednStates, residing at Glencoe, in the county of Payne and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Draft-Equalizer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to draft-equalizers, and is especially designed as an improvement on my Patent No. 711,538, dated October 21, 1902, and has for itsobjects to obviate certain defects which were found-to be attendant upon the construction covered by said patent when put into practical operation, and especially to produce a more thorough equalization of the draft. 1
The invention comprises the details of con- In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved form of drafti Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional i I further, that by attaching the end of the rod equalizer. elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a vehicle tongue or pole, to which is attached, as in my former .patent, by a bolt or otherwise a horizontal arm 2, having pivoted at its outer end a draft-beam 3, provided at its opposite ends with doubletrees 4t and.5, of which the latter is, owing to the arrangement of the.
parts, sustained centrally over the .tongue 1 in such manner that one of its singletrees 6 dies at the left or grain side of the pole and its other singletree 7 at theright or stubble These parts may all be constructed and side. arranged as in my prior patent or in other suitable manner, inasmuch as the same con- :stitute no part of the present invention, which :resides, essentially, in the form of bracketframe which I employ and the manner of positioning the same relative to the draft-beam.
My improved bracket-frame comprises a :metal bar bent to substantially V shape and having an arm 8, which extends outward from the pole at right angles thereto and just in rear of the draft-beam '3, and an arm 9, at-
tached at its inner end to the pole directlyon a line with the singletrees and extending outward from the pole at an obtuse angle thereto. To the outer end of this frame I attach,
by means of an adjustable member 10, a rod 10, which extends rearwardly and inwardly toward the pole and has its inner end engaged ley 12, sustained by an arm 13, attached to the pole. Attached to the other end of the flexible connection 11 is a rod 14, which projects forwardly and outwardly from the pole and at its outer end is pivotally connected with the draft-beam by means of a clevis 15, these parts all being constructed and arranged as in my prior patent with the exception of the manner of attaching the rods 10 and 14 to the arm 8 and draft-beam 3, respectively.
The rod 10 acts in conjunction with rod 14 and flexible connection 11 to exert the back pull necessary for counteracting side draft,
5 and in practice I have found that by arrangingthe arm 8 of the bracket-frame just in rear of the draft-beam and attaching to the outer end of the same the rod 10* I obtain just .the proper amount of back pull necessary for properly neutralizing the side draft and thus perfectly equalizing the draft, and,
10 to the horizontal bar 8 by means of an adj ustable member the device may be readily regulated to meet varying conditions. Hence the herein-described changes, though apparently slight, are, as a matter of fact, of vast importance in that they render the device efflcient in operation and practically entirely free from side draft.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a draft-equalizer, the combination with a pole, of a horizontal arm pivoted thereto, a draft-beam pivoted to the outer end of the arm, a doubletree pivoted to the outer end of the draft-beam, a doubletree pivoted to the inner end of the draft-beam and provided with singletrees lying one at either side of the pole, a bracket-frame attached to the stubble side of the pole and having an arm extended at right angles therefrom just in rear of the draft-beam,an arm connected with the pole and carrying a pulley, and a flexible connection carried by the pulley and having one end operatively connected with the draftbeam at its pivotal point and its other end with the outer end of the bracket-frame;
2. In a draft-equalizer, the combination with a pole, of a horizontal arm pivoted thereto, a draft-beam pivoted to the outer end of the arm, a doubletree pivoted to the outer one end operatively connected with the draftend of the draft-beam, a doubletree pivoted beam at its pivotal point and at its other end IO connection carried by the pulley and having adj ustably connected with the bracket-frame. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in I 5 the presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM H. SHELL. Witnesses:
JOHN M. LINsEY, TERRY MARLIN.
