To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES B. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brady, in the county of McCulloch and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Neck-Yoke, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to neck yokes, and is particularly an improvement over the neck yoke or tongue attachment disclosed in my Patent N 0. 1,020,268, issued March 12, 1912.
The present invention contemplates the provision of novel and improved means for mounting a neck yoke or breast bar upon the forward or free end portion of the tongue or pole of a vehicle, plow, or the like, whereby the neck yoke or breast bar will be effectively supported in place, and whereby the strains will be properly transmitted from the yoke or breast bar to the tongue or pole.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved structure. Fig. 2 is a fragmental view thereof, parts being shown in section, and parts being shown in full.
In carrying out the present invention, the neck yoke or breast bar 1 is mounted upon a bracket or carrier 2, which is formed from a bar or strip of metal, and the intermediate or central portion of which is pivoted or fulcrumed upon the tongue or pole 3 by means of a bolt or securing member 4 engaged through the central portion of the bracket or carrier 2 and through the tongue or pole 3. The bracket or carrier 2 .is provided with a pair of laterally inclined or upwardly diverging arms 5 projecting from its central or body portion, and the end portions of the yoke or breast bar 1 are secured rigidly upon the extremities of the arms 5, whereby the yoke will be firmly carried by the bracket or carrier 2. The yoke or breast bar 1 is provided with slots 6 adjacent its ends, through which the looped straps 6 are passed to connect the ends of the yoke 1 to the collars of the horses or draft animals, the straps 6 being adjustable within the slots 6 to accommodate various teams of draft animals.
The salient'or cardinal feature of the present invention resides in the combination with the bracket or carrier 2 and the yoke or breast bar 1, of a brace 7, which prevents the yoke 1 from being flexed or displaced longitudinally with the bracket or carrier 2 under the strains to which the yoke is subjected. The brace 7 is formed from a rod of comparativelv rigid material, and is inclined forwardly. The rear or lower end 8 of the brace 7 is flattened and bent angular-1y to rest snugly upon the tongue or pole 3, and is provided with an aperture 9 through which a bolt or securing member 10 is passed. The bolt 10 is engaged through the tongue or pole 3, and is provided with a hook 11 at its upper end engaging over the lower or rear end of the brace 7 and impinging against the tongue 3. The upper end 12 of the brace 7 is flattened and bent angularly to rest snugly against the bottom of the yoke 1, intermediate the ends of the yoke, and directly above the bolt or fulcrum member l. The upper or forward end 12 of the brace 7 is provided with an aperture 13 through which a bolt or securing member ll is passed, the bolt 14 being engaged through the yoke 1 and having a lower hook 15 engaging over the forward or upper end of the brace 7 and impinging against or engaging the yoke. The bolt 14 is coaxial with the lower bolt l, whereby the yoke 1 is pivotally connected to the forward or upper end of the brace 7, coaxial with the fulcrum of the bracket or carrier 2, whereby the yoke and its bracket or carrier may readily swing or vibrate back and forth under the varying conditions. The yoke 1 is thus firmly supported above the for- I ward or free end of the tongue or pole 3, whereby the ends of the yoke 1 may be readily connected to the collars of the draft animals, and which will reduce the tendency of the tongue or pole 3 to be swung vertically. The brace 7 will take up any strain transmitted to the yoke l, to prevent the forward or rearward movement of theyoke l with respect to the tongue or pole 3, as would be objectionable.
The peculiar assemblage of the component parts, as above set forth and as illustrated in the drawing, is therefore of advantage in several respects, as will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
