Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed February 20, 1906. Serial No. 302,040.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK BRAIS and STEPHEN N ADEAU, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sc-ribers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to scribers or compasses, and has for its object the provision of improved means for securing the point within one of the legs of said scriber and for adjusting said point with relation to said legs.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forthin the detailed description which now follows.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a scriber or compass constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a view showing the parts spread apart to their full extent and looking at the inner faces thereof. Fig. 4 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of the leg of the scriber which holds the pencil. Fig. 5 is a View, partly in elevation and partly in section, of the leg of the scriber in which the point is held and of the pivot-screw of the scriber. Fig. 6 illustrates a side and edge elevation of the scriber-point.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates the pivot-screw of the scriber. This screw is provided with a rounded head 6 and an angular shoulder 7. The pencilcarrying leg 8 of the scriber is open at one side, as at 9, to form a resilient memberwhich will grasp the pencil 10 in the usual and wellknown manner. The upper portion of the leg 8 is provided with a pair of angularly disposed arms 11, which are preforated, as at 12, for the reception of screw 5. The point-carrying leg 13 of thescriber has two inwardlyextending flanges or arms 14, one of which is perforated, as at 15,for the reception of the shank of the screw, and the other of which has an angular opening 16 formed therein for the reception of the angular portion 7 of screw 5.
In assembling the parts of the scriber, the arms 11 of leg 8 are placed between the arms or flanges 14 of leg 13, and a washer 17 is inserted between the arms 11, after which screw 5 is passed through the openings 12 and until the angular portion 7 of screw 5 lies in the angular portion] 6 of leg 13. Athumbnut 18 is then threaded upon the end of screw 5 to bind all of the parts together and to provide for securing varying degrees of tension. The leg 13 comprises the front wall 13 and the side wall 13 one of which is slotted, as at 19. This leg is also cut, as at 20, and a small web of material lying between said out is bent downwardly, as at 21, to form a keeper for the point 22. The upper end of this point is provided with upstanding flanges 23, which lie close alongside of the wall 13 and receive a threaded end 24 of a thumb-screw 25.
By loosening the thumb-screw 25 the point 22 may be moved longitudinally of leg 13 to secure varying adjustments of said point.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for securing a point within the leg of a scriber in such manner as to render said point adjustable with relation to said leg, and improved means are also provided for securing the legs of the scriber together in such manner that the tension of the connections may be readily varied when desired.
While the elements herein shown and de scribed are well adapted to serve the purpose for which they are intended, it is to be understood that our invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described our invention, what we claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a leg ada ted to receive a pencil, of a point-carrying eg pivoted to said first-named leg, a keeper carried b the point-carrying leg, a point slidably disposed beneath said keeper and having an upstanding flange at its upper end and a setscrew which passes through a slot formed in the side wall of said leg and is threaded into said upstanding flange.
2. A scriber or compass comprising a pencil-carrying leg and a point-carrying leg, means for binding said le 's together, an integral web struck from the point-carrying leg and forming a keeper, a point slidably dis- In testimony whereof We affix our signa posed beneath said keeper, an upstanding tures in presence of two Witnesses. flange carried by the upper end of said point FREDERICK BRAIS. and lying against the side Wall of the point= STEPHEN N ADEAU.
