ABEL A. ADAMS, OF FELOHVILLE, ASSIGNOR TO RUSSELL W. PINNEYv AND FORREST L. PINNEY, OF BRIDGEWATER, VERMONT.
Letters Patent No. 82,269, dated September 22, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT 1N HEAD-moors.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it known that I, ABEL A. ADAMS, of Felchville, of the lcounty of Windsor, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head-Blocks for Saw-Mills and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, iu which Figure 1 is a top view,
Figure 2 a. front elevation,
Figure 3 a longitudinal section, and
Figure 4 a transverse section of my improved headblock.
In such drawings, A denotes the bed, having applied to it two head-blocks B C; they being so connected with it as to be capable of being moved rectilinearly therein, in a diretion lengthwise of it.
Each of such head-blocks has a series of dogs, ra a, extending through standards b b, arranged on it, and provided with set-screws c c, to hold the dogs in place after they may have been driven into a log.
Furthermore, there is a rack, e,'to each of the standards, such being arranged in manner as represented, and for the purpose of enabling a person, by means of a lever resting at its foot againet one of the teeth of a rack, to force back its dog, by pressure against the hook or head thereof. i
The head-blocks are-provided with clamp-serew bolts e e, which screw into nuts ff, arranged in a dovetailed groove, g, made in the bed; the purpose of such groove, bolts, andnuts being to enable a person'to clamp the head-block in position on the bed. The saw-port or recess of the bed is shown at 7L.
In rear of such recess is a connection-bar, z', which rests on the bed in grooves made in the twohead-blocks, and is fastened to the block C. A pin, k, goingv down through the head-block B, and into one of a series of holes made in the said bar, serves to so connect the auxiliary head-block C to Athevprimary head-block B as to enable the former to be moved by the latter and its operative-mechanism.4 Another pin, c, when inserted down through the head-block C, and into a hole in the bed A, serves to hold the head-block C stationary on the bed.
There is fixed to the bottom of the primary head-block a rack, l, which engages with a gear, m, xed on a shaft, n, arranged in manner as represented.
There is another gear, o, on and fixed to such shaft.
Furthermore, a lever, 79, so applied to the shaft as to be capable of turning freely thereon, carries not only a duplex rocker-frame, g, (provided with a working-arm, r,) but also has a sector, s, extended from it, and aside of and over the gear o, in manner asV represented. Through the said sector is a curved slot, t, through which, and a movable stop, u, a .clamp-screw, n, is passed, and screws into a thumb-nut, w. The. purpose of the screw and nut is to fix the stop in any desirable position on the periphery of the' sector, on which is a scale of divisional marks and numbers. y i
Another stop-pawl, x, hinged to the bed, and formed and arranged, with respect to the gear o and sector s, in manner as shown in the drawings, has its free end bevelled, in order that, when pressed against such end, the sector shall force up the stop-pawl, in order that 'the sector may pass underneath it, and the other stoppawl be brought up in contact with it.
An abutment or stop, y, extended from the bed, serves to limit the descent of 'the lever p, which, when in its lowest position, rests on such abutment. A spring, z, extends from the Working-arm, and underneath and against a stud, a', projecting from the lever p. A graduating-pawl, (applied to the front of the bed,) when turned against the gear o, serves to prevent it from being revolved in one direction. 4'
The purpose of the sector s, its adjustable stop u, the hinged stop-pawl as, and the abutment y, is to regulate the amount of vibration of the lever p, in order to e'ect equa-l movements of the head-block, the length of each ,of such movements depending 'on the distance ofthe stop u from the upper end ofthe sector.
The auxiliary head-block enables sawing to beeifected on one log while the otherhead-block is being I moved-back to place for reception of another log.
By laying hold of the working-lever, and raising it, while, at the same time, we raise the lever p, we cause the duplex-pawl to actuate the gear o, in a manner to effect the baokward movement of the main head-block.
By means of the lever p and its wvorking-pawl, we can operate the gear o in either direction, the sector s, the adjustable stop u, the hinged stop-pawl x, and the stationary abutment y serving to regulate the distance of each vibration of the lever, in order to eiect equal movements of the head-block or blocks What I claim as my invention is as follows:
T. claim the combination of the sector s,vits adjustable stop u, and hinged stop-pawl x, wltn une gear o, its operating-lever p, working-pawl g, and abutment y, the same being applied to the bed, and tothe shaft ofthe rack-pinion of the main head-block, substantially in manner and fnr the purpose or objects as set forth.
' ABEL A. ADAMS.
