CONDUCTORS CHECK HOLDING AND CUTTING: DEVICE.I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1906.
Application iiled August 25, 1905. Serial No. 275,773.
T0 a/ZZ whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER D. Jos- LIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Conductors Check Holding and Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a modification of what has been shown in previous patents granted to me upon holders for tickets, checks, &c.- such, for instance, as the one shown in my Patent No. 467,936, of February 2, 1892. My endeavor therein has been to do away with the metal box or holdershell of the patented construction, thereby effecting a very -considerable economy in construction and also lightening and simplifying the device. This end I accomplish as follows:
I take a series of the tickets or checks and arrange them one on top of another in book or tablet form and then mount the series on a pasteboard or equivalent base, and secure them to such base by suitable means, preferably consisting of the severing blade or straight edge and the means by which the blade is held to the base. By this construction the book or tablet of tickets is securely clamped between rigid parts-t'. e., the base and the blade-and as the means for holding the blade are adapted to contract as the pile of tickets or checks diminishes it follows that the blade exerts a constant pressure on the pile, and such pressure is sufficient to retain the tickets in orderly form during the use of the package and until the last ticket is used. The tickets may be loose-that is, unattached to each other-or they may, if preferred, be bound together in any suitable way-as, for instance, by stapling or sewing them together after the manner of binding pamphlets or by pasting strips of paper to their edges. The latter construction is the one illustrated herein.
'Ihe severing-blade or straight edge, with its sliding cutters, may be attached to the tablet by means of a rubber band or other spring fastening device adapted to hold the blade flat upon the top of the tickets or checks and to contract as the pile diminishes in height, so as to continue the pressure thereon. The proper position of the blade relative to the severing-line of the tickets or checks is insured by providing the tablets or books with vertical guiding slots or notches in each end and the blade with projections at each end adapted to enter the slots or notches and to move down in the same as the tickets are withdrawn from the pile.
These and other details of the invention are fully set forth below and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which latter- Figure 1 is a plan of the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the lines 3 3 and 4 4, respectively, of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows the severed ticket.
In said drawings, 5 represents the base of the book or tablet, formed of pasteboard or other inexpensive material having the rigidity necessary. It is of the same size as the tickets and without any vertical flanges whatever. The tickets or checks, which generally consist of the conductors cash-fare slip 6 and the auditors stub 7, are arranged in a pile on the base 5 and are desirably secured thereto by paper or cloth strips 8 and 9, pasted to the base and to the top and bottom edges of the tickets or checks, the tickets and base thus forming a tablet in which the longitudinal edges of the tickets are left free to be taken hold of by the conductor.
The straight edge or severing-blade shown at 10 is adapted to lie flat upon the top of the pile of checks or tickets and to be held against the face of the tickets by the thumb of the conductor while each ticket is divided and its halves removed. It is provided with the adjustable cutters 11, shown in my said patents, and employed to form the indicating notches and projections on the edges of the severed parts of the tickets, and such cutters are preferably so made that they may be sprung onto and off the blade. The blade is held to the tablet by the rubber band 12, which is passed under the base and looped over the hooks 13, formed at the ends ofthe blade. I use the rubber band for this purpose as it is the simplest and cheapest device known to me and because it is adapted to contract as the tickets are withdrawn and to hold the blade down on them with a uniform pressure at all times; but any other construction of attaching device may be used which will accomplish the same results.
For the positioning of the blade I form in the ends of the tablet vertical guide slots or notches 14 and rovide the blade at each end with small bac rward or downward projections 15, adapted to enter said slots and to move down in them as the blade moves down- IOO IIO
ward in obedience to the spring-attaching device, the blade being -thus held against either longitudinal or lateral movement.
The bunch of'tickets thus secured together in tablet form is well adapted to retain its shape and integrity in the pocket and in the handling to which it is necessarily subjected, and the blade is always in proper position for severing the ticket, and it will be understood that while I have illustrated the invention as applied to a tablet of tickets l do not wish to be limited to the tablet form nor to the use of the binding-strips illustrated.
The blade 10 and cutter l1 are adapted to be used in separating the auditors stub from the fare-slip, forming in vso doing the notch upon one and the projection upon the other, as plainly shown at Fig. 5. The guidenotches in the ends of the ticket tend to insure the tearing of the ticket in commencing the severing operation at the proper point, which is witthin the notch rather than outside of it.
I claiml. In a check holding and cutting device, the combination of a severing-blade having sliding cutters, and a contractible device attached at both ends to the said blade and arranged to pass longitudinally along the back of a series of checks when the latter are interposed between the blade and the said contractible device, substantially as set forth.
2. In a check holding and cutting device, the combination of a severing-blade having sliding cutters, and a contractible device attached at both ends to the said blade and arranged to pass therefrom backward and through the recesses of a series of recessed checks, and along the back of the checks from one series olrecesses to the other series of recesses, when such checks are interposed between the blade and the said contractible device, substantially as set forth.
3. The check holding and severing device consisting of a base corresponding in size to the tickets, a severing-blade carrying sliding cutters, said blade having projections adapted to enter and move in slots in the edges of the tickets and a contractiblewattaching device for securing the blade to the base.
4. The cheek holding and severing device ceases consisting of a base for the pile of tickets, a severing-blade provided with sliding cutters adapted to be placed across the top of the pile and means for attaching the blade to the base in such manner as to produce pressure upon the tickets, said attaching means being adapted to enter notches formed in the edges of the tickets.
5. The check holding and severing device consisting of a base corresponding in size to the tickets, a severing-blade carrying sliding cutters, said blade having projections adapted to enter and move in recesses formed in the tickets and a contractible attaching device ior securing the blade to the base.
6. The check holding and severing device consisting. of a base for the pile of tickets, a severing-blade provided with sliding cutters adapted to be placed across the top of the pile and means for attaching the blade to the base in such manner as to produce pressure upon the tickets, said attaching means being adapted to enter recesses formed in the tickets.
7. The check-holding device, the severingblade whereof is provided with downward projections adapted to engage the tickets or checks and thus be held against change of position along the face of and relative to the tickets while the tickets are being withdrawn.
8. The check-holding device, the severingblade whereof is provied with downward projections adapted to engage the tickets or checks and thus be held against change 'of position relative to the tickets, in combination with a contractible device causing constant pressure by the blade upon the tickets and downward movement by it as the tickets are withdrawn. A.
9. The 4check holding and cutting device consisting of a severing-blade having sliding cutters mounted thereon, the said blade having backward and downward projections arranged to enter in recesses formed in a series of checks, and to be gradually moved backward in said recesses as the front checks are cut and issued, substantially as set forth.
