JAMES A. RANKIN, OF VHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO FRANK R. SCROGGINS, OF WHEELING, TEST VIRGINIA.
SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
iratented May 29, 1906.
Application filed December 23, 1905. Serial No. 293,114.
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. RANKIN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of I/Vheeling, county of Ohio, and State of West'Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in carpenters squares, and more particularly to `what I term a knockdown7 square; and it consists in the particular construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully described.
The object of the invention is to provide a carpenters square having detachable members which adapt it for being knocked down when not in use, thus rendering it convenient to handle and to pack in an ordinary toolbox.
In describing the invention in detail reference is herein had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this Specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a similar View of a portion of one of the members, showing the under face thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a portion of the other member, showing the upper face thereof 3 and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 4 4, Fig. 1.
Referring to said drawings, in which like reference -numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates one of the arms or members of a square, said member having its end 2 beveled outward from the inner edge thereof and adapted for fitting against the similarly-beveled end 3 of the other arm or member 4. In the upper face of the beveled end 2 of the member 1 is a short shallow longitudinal dovetail channel 5, which tapers gradually from the said beveled end 2.
The member 4 of the square is provided with a beveled end 3 for fitting against the beveled end 2 and is also provided with an integral tapered tongue 6, having beveled edges for fitting closely within the dovetail channel 5.
In the member 1 at one side of and communicating with the channel 5 is a substantially semicircular recess 7 of equal depth with said channel, and mounted therein upon a pivot 8 is a turn-button 9, corresponding inkr size and shape with the recess in which it is mounted. In the edge of the tongue 6 is a recess 10, which is adapted to register with the recess 7 when said tongue is :fitted within said channel to form a circular opening in which said button 9 may be manipulated to secure said tongue against movement in said channel. As is apparent, when thc straight edge 11 of the button 9 is turned into aline-A ment with the edge of the channel the tongue may be inserted in and removed from the channel without hindrance, and when said button is turned slightly in either direction it engages the recess 10 in the tongue and securely holds said tongue against longitudinal movement in the channel or, in other words, interlocks the two members 1 and 4.
The button 9 is preferably provided with a groove 12, by which it may be engaged for turning by the point of a screw-driver. Said button stands in said recess with its exposed face flush with the face of the square.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by my invention I provide a square having detachable or separable members, rendering it convenient to carry in the ordinary carpenters tool-box. The member 1 may when detached be employed as a rule or straightedge.
I have described my invention more or less in detail and in what I consider to be its simplest form; but it is obvious that various slight changes may be made in the construction without departing from the general spirit or scope thereof. Hence I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a carpenters square, two separable arms or members, one member provided with a plain mitered end, a tapered dovetail channel in the face of said member and extending longitudinally therein from said mitered end, a mitered edge at the end of the second member for coinciding with the mitered end of the first-mentioned member, an integral tapered tongue carried by the mitered end of said second member and overlying the mitered edge thereof, said tongue having its edges and point beveled for fitting in said channel,

in the edge of said tongue, said recesses being JAMES A RANKIN adapted to register when said tongue is in pof siton in said channel, `and a substantially Vitnesscs:
