DRAWING INSTRUMENT.
(Application filed Dec. 80, 1901.)
(No Model.)
-- l'lED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX C. ZANGE, on NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
DRAWING INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,738, dated May 13, 1902.
Application filed December 80, 1901. Serial No. 87,803. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX 0. ZANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, haveinvented a new Improvement in Drawing Instruments and Similar Tools, of which the following is a full description.
My invention relates to an improvement in drawing instruments and similar tools which are of small thickness and adapted to be reversed face for face, as triangles, curves, protractors, and other instruments.
The accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, illustrate the improvement.
To facilitate the handling of the instruments, I use a removable handle.
Figure I of the drawings is a plan view of the handle. Fig. II is aview of an elevation of it. Fig. III is a section through its vertical axis 0 0. Fig. IV is a perspective view showing the handle mounted in a drawing instrument. Fig. V is a plan View of a drawing instrument, showing the handle mounted therein without a bushing or block. Fig. V1 is a section through Fig. V at the line 00 :0.
The handle consists of a rod R, sliding in a bushing or block B. From the block or bushing B a projecting part A enters a recess G of the rod, running lengthwise to near each end of the rod, thus forming a stop on each end of the-rod, preventing it from dropping out of the bushing and from turning around in same. The bushing is made according to the thickness of the material of the instrument and also the rod so adjusted as not to form an obstruction upon the surface in contact with the work. lhe assembled handle is secured in a corresponding opening of the instrument, preferably near the center of gravity, and held in place by friction or adhesion.
Where the material and shape of the instrument allow it, the bushing or block may i be omitted and the rod be used in connection instrument will slide down the rod by its weight to the supporting-surface, or the rod may be pushed toward the opposite face of the instrument to act as handle again. Thus one end of the rod will project above one surface of the instrument, while the other end is flush with the lower surface thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combinationwith a flat drawing instrument, adapted to be reversed face for face, of a handle mounted therein, and movable through the instrument to project above whichever face of the instrument is uppermost.
2. The combination with a fiat drawing instrument, adapted to be reversed face for face of a handle mounted therein, and movable through the instrument from one face to the other according to the face thereof that is uppermost so that the handle projects above the uppermost face of the instrument, and lies flush with the lower thereof.
3. The combination witha fiat drawing instrument, adapted to be reversed face for face, of a sliding handle mounted in the instrument at a right angle to the plane thereof and formed at its ends with stops which limit the movement of the handle in either direction, whereby when the instrument lies on one face the handle will project above its opposite face, and vice versa.
4.. The combination with a fiat drawing in .strument adapted to be reversed face for face, of a bushing mounted therein, and a sliding handle mounted in the bushing, provided with stops at its ends and sliding to project beyond the opposite faces, of the instrument according to which is uppermost.
5. The combination with a flat drawing in strument,- of a bushing mounted therein, a stop-piece located in the said bushing, and a sliding handle mounted in the bushing and provided at its ends with stops engaging with the said stop-piece for limiting the movement of the handle in either direction.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
