PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. GIBBS, OF WHITSETT, PENNSYLVANIA.
SECTIONAL STEEL SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,474, dated July 19, 1904.
Application filed March 25, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. GIBBs, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVhitsett, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Steel Squares; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to lthe gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. y
My invention relates to steel squares in general use by carpenters, bridge-builders, masons, blacksmiths, &c.
The objects of 1my invention are, first, to provide a steel square that may be taken apart in order to place same in tool-chest when not in use; second, to avoid the necessity of making a hole in the lid of the tool-chest, through which the tongue of the square may protrude and through which the rain also goes when chest is left out in the weather; third, to provide a steel square that will be more useful in so far as it consists practically of two smaller squares, either of which, or both, may be used.
In referring to the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my sectional steel square complete. Fig. 2 shows a section of square on the broken line A B, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the blade disconnected. Fig. 4 shows the tongue of square disconnected, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged drawing of the clamping-screw.
In carrying out my invention the blade l has an arm 2, and the tongue 3 has an arm 4. Said arms project at right angles and are halved tothe points 5 and 6, said halved portions having the perforations 7 7 7 and 8 8 8. The perforations in tongue 3 are countersunk to give a bearing for the head or shoulder 9 Serial No. 149,598. (No model.)
of the clamping-screw lO, which is provided with a slot or recess 1l. The barrel or shank of said screw is threaded to engage after passing through the perforations 8 8 8 the threaded perforations 7 7 7, thereby forminga means by which the two sections of the square are clamped together, as shown at 13, thereby forming .a rigid and complete square, said square being taken apart and put together by the aid of any ordinary screw-driver.
rThe drawings show the projecting arms to 5 5 be a certain length. They show also three screws employed; butI would have it clearly understood that I do not limit myself to any precise length of' arms or to any precise number of screws or to any precise location of same.
Having thus shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A sectional steel square, consisting of a blade with a projecting arm at a right angle therefrom, said arm and a portion of said blade having one-half of their thickness cut away, and having a number of perforations, the same being threaded, a tongue with a projecting arm at a right angle therefrom,
said arm, and a portion of said tongue, having 'half of its thickness cut away, and having a number of perforations, the same being countersunk to form a seat or bearing for the shoulders of the clamping-screws, a number of clamping-screws, the head of each being slotted, and the shoulder beveled to form the clamping action, and to bring all parts flush when clamped together, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. GIBBS.
