BERT CHURCHILL, or rouLoN, ILLINOIS.
CORNER PUTTY-KNIFE.
Application filed March 31, 1915. Serial No. 18,335.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERT CHURCHILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toulon, in the county of Stark and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner Putty- Knives, of which thefollowing is a specification.
The present invention relates to a corner putty knife, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which em bodies novel features of construction where by it can be employed in the ordinary manner and can also be used advantageously in a corner or for pressing putty or the like into the crac s of old floors.
Further objects ,of the invention are to provide a device of this character which can be inexpensively constructed from a single piece of sheet material, which can be used to equal advantage upon plain surfaces and in corners, and which will stand the ordinary rough handling without danger of breakage.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a corner putty knife constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig.3 is a transverse sectional view through the blade on the line 33 of Fig.
2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View through the handle on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view, showing the manner of rolling the sheet material to form the handle of the putty knife.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The corner putty knife is preferably formed by suitably bending a single piece of sheet material, both the handle and blade being one integral construction so that there are no parts to become separated and lost.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character A designates the blade, and B the handle, both members having an integral Specification of Letters Patent.
in a beveled edge 1 while the inner end thereof merges into the handle B. The auxiliary arm projects from one edge of the main arm 1 at substantially right angles thereto and terminates at its outer end in a bevel edge 2*, the inner end thereof gradually decreasing in width at. 2 and finally merging into the main arm 1. The handle B is substantially a continuation of the main arm 1, the flat sheet material'of which the device is formed being rolled or turned to give the handle a tubular formation with closed outer and inner ends. A. very strong and rigid construction is thus obtained and when the tool is thus formed it will stand rough usage without danger of being broken, and there are no parts such as are liable to get loose and become lost. The tool can be used upon plain surfaces in the same manner as an ordinary putty knife and will enable an operator to work easily in corners and other places which could only be reached by an ordinary putty knife with extreme difficulty. The handle B would be disposed at an angle to the plate 1, being preferably arranged at an angle of substantially 45 to the plane thereof. 7
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A corner putty knife including ablade formed with two longitudinally extending arms arranged at substantially right angles to each other and terminating at their outer ends in square edges, and a handle applied to the inner end of the blade.
2. A corner putty knife including a blade formed with a pair of arms arranged at sub-- stantially right angles to each other and terminating at their outer ends in square auxiliary arm projecting from one edge of the main arm and arranged at substantially right angles thereto, while the handle is constructed by rolling the edges of an extension of the main blade into a substantially tubnlar formation.
l. A corner putty knife formed from a single piece of sheet material and including an integral blade and handle, the blade being formed with a main arm and an auxiliary arm projecting at substantially right angles from one edge thereof, the two arms terminating at their free ends in square edges While the auxiliary arm gradually de creases in width at its inner end and merges into the main arm, the handle having a tubular formation and being provided by rolling the edges of an extension at the inner end of the main arm of the blade.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERT CHURCHILL.
