Description
v'UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIcE.
L. D. PHILLIPS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TROWEL.
Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 16,021, dated November 4, 1856.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, L. D. PHILLIPS, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trowels, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a new and useful improvement in trowel for plastering in architecture.
The invention relates more particularly to the entire open bottom of the mortar chamber, the double flange attached to said chamber to enable the operator to work the trowel in opposite directions as will be described, and the combined arrangement of devices for operating the follower.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective of the top of the trowel. Fig. 2 is an inverted isometrical view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken in the line w-.r Fig. 1.
Similar characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
A is the chamber which contains the mortar.
(B) are t-he springs which are attached to the follower at its longitudinal center.
(C) is a guide or brace also attached to the follower for the purpose of preventing it from twisting when the instrument is operated as will be described.
D, D are flanges formed on the edge of the mortar chamber and serve as trowels to smooth and finish the surface of the plaster on the wall.
(E) are gages attached to either end of the mortar chamber by means of set screw (J) in slot (K) the use of which is to regulate the thickness of the plaster as it is laid on the wall.
(L) is a pin which projects out through slot (K) and acts in conjunction with screw (J) in holding gage (E) in proper position.
(I) is the` handle which is secured to the follower (Gr), and by means of which the instrument is operated.
(F) are stops attached to the inner edge of the mortar chamber to prevent the follower and its attachments from becoming entirely detached from the mortar chamber when relieved of the pressure of the operator.
Operation: The chamber having been filled with mortar, the operator by taking hold on handle I places t-he hollow bottom in contact with the wall, gages E being suitably adjusted, prevents one of the trowels D from coming in contact with the wall while the other, D', smooths the plaster as the implement is operated in one direction and vice versa. The handle I serves the double purpose of operating the implement on the wall and also of operating the follower Gr which presses the mortar from the chamber as described, after all the mortar is discharged from the chamber and handle I is relieves from pressure the reactive force of spring (D) causes the follower' to resume the position as shown in the drawing. Guide or brace C, preserves the right angle position of the follower to the sides of the chamber, while the implement is being operated by lateral pressure on handle I, as described. By the adjustable qualities of gages E, the operator is enabled to regulate the thickness of each coat of plaster as desired.
The object of the entire open bottom is to enable the operator more eifectually to press the mortar in between the lat-hs and thereby give greater firmness to the wall.
These trowels may be made of different sizes, suitable to operate with one hand or with both, or they may be made sufficiently large to require the strength of two men in their operation.
The great advantage found in the use of this invention over the common trowel, consists in the fact that it will contain a considerable amount of plaster and by the arrangements as described a constant feed is obtained until the entire contents of the chamber is discharged, thus saving a very considerable loss of time used in supplying the common trowel with mortar.
The double flange or trowels (D D) enables me to operate the implement in opposite directions, which also greatly enhances the rapidity of the operation. Its neatness and compact form is also another consideration of some value.
Having thus described my invention-I do not claim a mortar chamber having a folloWer operated in it, as that has been here- 3. I claim the general arrangement of the 10 tofore known, but What I do claim and Wish follower and its appendages, Viz., springs to secure by Letters Patent is- (B) (B), guide or brace (C) and handle I l. I claim the adjustable gages (E) Attest: as applied to my troWel operating in the C. M. ALEXANDER, manner and for the purpose described. I. C. WILLsoN.
