GAG-ING DEVICE ATTACHED TO HAND-SAWS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,531, dated April 5, 1859.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, VVILLIAM MoNIEon, of Conshohocken, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and Improved Implement or Article of Manufacture, the same being a combination of a back-saw, square, and bevel; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side view of my invention;

This invention consists in fitting an adjustable or folding blade or plate in the metal rib or back bar of the saw, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby said blade or plate in connection with the rib or back bar of the saw, produces the combination of the several tools specified, to wit, a back saw, square and bevel.

To enable those skilled in the art, to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents an ordinary back-saw, a, being the blade, 6, the handle, and c, the metal. rib or back bar, which is formed as usual of a metal strip doubled or folded, and fitted over the back edge of the blade a, and clasping the same.

In the outer edge of the rib or back bar 0, a longitudinal slot d, is made to allow a metal plate B, to fit thereon, and between the sides of the rib or back bar. This plate B, may be graduated similar to an ordinary carpenters rule or square, and the plate B, is secured at one end in the rib or back bar 0, by a thumb screw C. The plate B is allowed to fold snugly in the rib or bar 0,

and it may be moved out at any angle therewith, from the most acute to a right angle. The plate B, owing to the close proximity of the screw C to the edge or termination of the slot d, is not allowed to be shoved outward or moved beyond a right angular position with the rib or back bar a and the plate may be secured at any intermediate point by screwing up the screw G. t

hen the plate B is adjusted at right angles to the rib or bar 0 a square is obtained, and when it is adjusted obliquely a miter or bevel is obtained. It is necessary that the outer or back edge of the rib or back bar 0 be perfectly straight in order that an eflicient implement be obtained.

The invention may be applied to any back saw wit-h its rib 0, made straight. The additional cost of the plate B, is quite trifling, and it will prove to be a time saving device for the saw accompanies the bevel and the square, it being most generally the succeeding tool used, and the work of measuring or laying out bevels, miters or squares for sawing may be done and the work sawed out very expeditiously much more so than if separate tools were employed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent as a new and useful article of manufacture is- The back saw A, with the folding or adjustable blade B, fitted in its rib or back bar a, substantially as described.
