COMBINATION RULE AND TRY-SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed January 16, 1908. Serial No. 411,108.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN A. ELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountholding said sections at a right angle 'to each other whereby the rule may be used in the capacity of a square. The said holding means is so arranged upon one of the sections of the rule as to lie.completely within the perimeter of the same when not in use and therefore presents no obstruction to the free use of the rule. The parts of the holding means are also so arranged'that they do not project laterally beyond the sides of the rule when used for holding the sections of the rule at an angle, consequently, when used as a square the rule may lie flat at either side upon the work without obstruction on the part of the said holding means.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of rule showing the holding means applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of another form of rule showing the holding means applied thereto. Fi 3 is a detailed perspective view of the holding means detached, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of a rule section showing a modified form of holding means applied thereto.
The rule 1 may be of any design of carpenters rule generally known as a foot or two foot rule with sections hinged together as at 2. One of the sections is provided with an elongated groove 3 cut in its inner edge and the other section is provided with a recess 4 cut in its inner ed e. The pin 5 passes transversely through t e recess 4 and the bar or holder 6 is pivotally mounted at one end in the inner end of the groove 3. The bar 6 is provided at its opposite end with a notch 7 which is adapted to receive the pin 4. The bar 6 is adapted to lie in the groove 3 and when in such position has one edge which is flush with the inner edge of the rule section containing the said groove. The inner edge of the bar 6 is provided with a thumb lug 8 by means of which the said bar may be swung upon its pivot. The rule section having the groove 3 is provided at its edge with a recess 9 WlllCll is adapted to receive the thumb lug 8 and when the said lug is in the said recess its outer surfaces lie in the same plane as the'suriaces of the rule section. The thumb lug as shown in Fig. 3 extends to one side of the bar 6 only while the lug 8 as shown in Fig. 4 extends or lies upon the opposite sides of the bar 6. Thus, the bar as shown in Fig. 4 may be opened by inserting the thumb nail under the lug 8 at either side of the rule section. When it is desired to hold the sections of the rule 1 at a right angle to each other the bar 6 is swung upon its pivot and the free end of said bar is inserted in the recess 4 and the notch 7 is engaged upon the pin 5. Thus, the adjacent sections of the rule are held at a right angle while the said bar lies at an angle of 45 degrees with relation to the rule section. Thus, the bar may be used for indicating such an angle upon the work.
It will be observed that when the bar 6 is within the groove 3 it lies entirely within the perimeter of the rule section containing the said groove and consequently, does not interfere with the use of a rule as a straight edge, also when the bar is swung into engagement with the adjacent rule section that no parts of the bar or its attachments project aterally beyond the planes occupied by the sides of the rule sections.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination a rule having hinged sections adapted to lie in contact when folded, one of said sections having a longitudinal groove in'the center of its inner edge and a short shallow recess in the same edge leadingfrom said'groove to the side of the rule, the other section provided in its inner edge with a deep recess and a pin extending transversely across said recess; a thin flat bar pivoted at one end in one end of said groove and formed with a notch in its other end to engage with In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the pin in the deep recess and hold the two my own, I have hereto al'lixed my signature rule sections firmly at a right angle to each in the presence of two witnesses.
other and the flat bar at an angle of forty-five CALVIN A. ELY. degrees, said bar having a short thumb lug Witnesses:
fittin said shallow recess when the bar is JOHN WV. METoALF,
folde into the groove. l W. EARL ELY.
