Letters Patent No. 82,197, dated September 15, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATCHES.
Ell e fitlgthtl: referret tn in ll ma't Ztttttrs Extent ant making part at the slime.
Be it known that I, P. R. BENNETT, Jr., of Urbana, in the county of Champaign, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Mode of Setting Jewels in Watches; and I do hereby declare the following to be 216111, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and which is an enlarged view of the inner cap or plateof a watch, with the bush or jewel for the pivot of the balance-wheel suspended according to my invention.
The nature of my said invention consists in suspending or hanging the jewels or bushes of watches between lateral springs.
My invention, when applied to the balance of a watch, as hereinafter described, will prevent all damage to the pivot, and protect it from injury when the watch is rudely jarred, and even when the balance itself is accidentally struck.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction and operation. I
I secure, in any suitable manner, two or more springs, aa, to the jewel or bush, 6, of any of the movements of the watch, and then attach the outer-ends of said springs to the inner edge of a slightly-enlarged cavity made in the cap or plate, G, to receive the same, thereby suspending the jewel or'bush b centrally within said space, with an elastic bearing on every side thereof.
The springs may be plain, fluted, or of other desirable form, and may be made straight, curved, or with a spiral coi-l. Their ends may be received into recesses cut in the periphery of the cavity which receives the jewel, as illustrated in the drawing, or otherwise secured thereto, at pleasure.
Ordinarily, set-screws, e, whose heads are broad enough to project beyond the edge of the cavity, may be used, to prevent an entire displacement of the bush by a rude shock, without, however, so confining it as to affect its elastic support by the springs.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentsuspending the jewel or bush of a watch by means of lateral springs placed about the same, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
The foregoing specification of my improved setting for jewels in watches, signed by me, this 10th day of April, A. D. 1868.
