HENRY O. COSTELLO, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SPINNING-TOP.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. COSTELLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spinning-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spinning-tops, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, cheap, and entertainin spinningtop which may be manipulated y any one and which by means of the construction here inafter described is adapted to be spun either upon the point or head thereof or upon a holder in the form of a rod or wire, the said top being adapted to assume various an les with relation to the holder, all as hereinafter explained.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a top constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical diametrical section through the same, showingthe holder and spinning string or cord. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate different positions that the top may be made to assume while spinning. Fig. 5 shows the top inverted to spin upon the head thereof.
The body 1 of the top is shown as solid and of substantially conical form, although it will be understood that any desired shape may be given to the top and the same may be mfidle e top is provided with a metallic spinnin point 2- and is also provided with an upstanding neck or stem 3, provided with a top with an enlarged head 4. The neck or stem 3 is bored to form a straight socket or opening 5 for the reception of the extremity of a holder 6, consisting of a suitable length of wire or a piece of rod preferably provided at its opposite end with a handle 7. While the inner portion of the socket 5 is straight and of a size adapted to have the holder 6 fit loosely therein, so that the top may spin around the holder, the outer portion of said socket is flared, as shown at 8, and any desired angle or degree of flare may be imparted to the said outer ortion of the socket 5. The head 4 is provi ed with an enlarged mouth or opening 9, and justwithin said mouth the head is rovided with an annular groove 10, adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February '7, 1906.
fatented May 22, 1906. Serial No- 299,964=.
receive the extremity of the holder 6 in the manner illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, said groove forming an annular retainer-1i 11, which during the spinning of the top 0 tains a hold on the extremity of the holder 6 and prevents the accidental displacement of the top. The neck 3 isadapted to receive the spinning string or cord 12, which may be wound thereon after the manner of an ordinary top.
In spinning the top the parts may be held in the relation shown in Fig. 2, with the point 2 resting on a table, floor, or other suitable sup ort and the holder inserted in the neck of t e top, or the parts may be inverted from the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the top will be supported upon the upper end of the holder 6. By pulling the cord or string 12 rapid rotary motion is imparted to the top, which may be allowed to spin on the floor or table or other horizontal surface or upon the holder 6. In spinning the top upon the holder 6 as a support the said holder maybe inclined until the top rides upward thereon, which is permitted by the flare of the outer portion of the socket 5. This may be continued until the extremity of the holder 6 enters the groove 10 in the head of the top, whereu 011 the top will continue to spin, as shown in i 3. The holder 6 may be lowered to an aI- most horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 4, and the top will continue to. spin upon the holder as long as the extremity of the holder remains in the groove 10. By the means described various angles may be assumed between the top and the holder, thus adding to the amusementof the operator and spectators.
I claim 1. A spinning-top provided with a holdersocket having a straight inner portion and a flaring outer portion, and further provided with an annular groove within the flared outer ortion of the socket.
2. spinning-top provided with a holdersocket having a straight inner portion, a flaring outer portion, and an annular retainerlip adjacent to the entrance to said flaring portion of the socket.
3. A spinning-top comprising a body, an upstanding neck provided. with a holdersocket having a straight inner portion and a flaring outer portion or throat leading to the 4. A spinning-top provided With a holder- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature sfiockceit having a straight inner portion fildha in presence of two Witnesses.
