W a M Ill . UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE LOUIS CHURCHILL AND WILLIAM B. JONES, OF WINSTED, CONNECTICUT.
SPANNER-WRENOH.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed September 5, 1903. Serial No. 172,107.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, THEODORE LOUIS CHURCHILL and WILLIAM B. Jones, citizens of the United- States, residing at Winsted, in the county ofLitchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Spanner- Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
pointed out in the claims, and s own in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of .our spanner. Fig.2 is a longitudinal vertical section, the ratchet being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the casing and ratchet-wheel, the springressed pawl being in elevation. Fi 4 is a iagrarnmatic view illustrating 21' met ed of using our device.
" shoulder C.
In the drewings, A represents a handle terminatingl at one end in a head A This head is curve back rearwardly over the handle. The handle is recessed on its upper face adj acent the head at A, the recess extending into the head A and opening rearwardly. The rearward curvatureof the head above the handle forms a jaw, and rotatably held within this jaw and transverse thereto is a rod B, threaded adjacent each end, the threads upoii one end being)to the ri ht and those at the o posite end eingto t e left. The to of the .ead or casing, as it may he terms is vertically slotted, formin a guideway C, having an annular shoulder formed therein. A plug C fits loosel in the upper portion of t Integral with this plug is a toothed pawl C engaging the teeth of a ratchet-wheel D when turned in one direction and adapted to sli when turned in the opposite direction. T e pawl rests loosely in the guideway and its tooth C has a straight and a beveled face.
'- A leaf-spring E is secured at one end on ends of the rod B. As previously stated,
s guideway an rests on the the head A and at the other end is secured to the plu C. As the handle isreciprocated the paw will slip in one direction, leaving the rod and ratchet stationary. The ratchet D is fixed on the rod B and rotates in the recess of thehandle, and when the handle is moved in the proper direction the pawl will engage the ratchet-teeth and the ratchet and rod will be rotated.
Tov apply the spanner to the rod B, it is only necessary to slightl lift the spring-leaf E, as by sli ping the t limb-nail under it, thus lifting t e pawl out of the recess .A, and
the handle can lie-brought into position so that the ratchet will rest in the hood formed by the recess A, and the rod will rest in the jaw formed by the head and handle. As soon as the pawl is allowed to drop it will engage the ratcheteteeth and the spanner Wil e locked to the rod and ratchet.
In drawing together two ends of a belt suitable sectional blocks E, having fluted inner faces to prevent their slippin are clamped to the edges of the belt E, an these blocks are adapted to receive the threaded.
these ends are oppositely threaded, and the rotation of the rod,'throu h the mediumof the handle, pawl, and rate et, will drawthe ends of the belt together. of the pawl, it is only necessary handle over.
To reverse action Having thus fully described our invention,
what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 3 A device of the kind descrih 4 comprising a handle, said handle having? headportion bent back upon the handle, t e saidhead and the adjacent portion of the handleiheing recessed, and the head having a slotformed in its periphery and communicating with'the recess, said slot being enlarged adjacent its outer end to form shoulders, a flat spring socured u on the head and projecting over the slot, a p ug carried by the spring and extending into t e slot, and a pawl carried at the lower end of the plug, as and for the purpose set forth.
