Be it known that I, OTIS MATHENEY, ,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chrisman, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compound Tools and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to compound tools; and its object is to, provide a device of this character which is of the hammer type and which has combined with it a device for ex tracting staples 1 Another object is to provide a tool of this character which is very durable in construc tion and which will effectively extract staples and can also be conveniently utilized as a hammer and wire-cutter.

The invention consists of a hammer having a pointed curved tongue extending from the head thereof, and fulcrurned to the handle of the hammer is a lever having a fork at one end which is adapted to straddle the tongue so as to force a staple upon the tongue when it is desired to extract it. The portions of the handle and lever adjoining their fulcrum are formed to constitute wire-cutters.

The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.-

In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention. In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimproved compound tool. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line a; 00, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one end of the tool, showing the positions assumed by the parts in the operation of extracting a staple.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a hammer-head of any suitable contour having a tapered tongue 2, extending rearwardly therefrom and curved so that the end of the tool will present a curved surface on which the tool can be rocked during the act of extracting a staple. The head has a handle 3 extending from it, and this handle is enlarged adjacent the head so as to present a substantially circular appearance, as shown at 4:, and recesses 5 are formed at diametrically opposite points within the periphery of this enlarged portion. A lever 6, having an enlarged circular portion 7, is connected to the handle 3 by means of a pivotpin 8, which extends through the centers of the enlarged portions 4 and 7, and said enlarged portions are approximately half the thickness of the handle and lever, so that when the two parts overlap and are in contact the handle and lever will lie in the same plane, as shown particularly in Fig. 3. One end of the lever 6 is forked, as shown at 9, and this fork is adapted to straddle the tongue 2. The enlarged portion 7 of lever 6 has grooves 10 in its periphery which are adapted to registerl with the grooves 5 when the tool is closed, as shown in Fig. 1.

When it is desired to extract a staple by means of this tool, the handle 2 and lever 6 are swung apart, so that the fork 9 will leave the tongue 2. The end of said tongue is then inserted in the staple and lever 6 is drawn toward the handle 3. The tongue will therefore be forced into the staple and said staple will be pressed upon the tongue, as shown particularly in Fig. 4;, and by rocking the tool on the curved end of its head the staple can be very easily extracted. The grooves 5 and 10 constitute eflicient Wire-cutters, and it is of course obvious that the head 1 can be utilized as a hammer. All of the parts of the tool are very durable and when assembled, as described by me, they constitute an efficient compound tool for the purposes intended.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a compound tool, the combination with a hammer-head having a curved tongue extending therefrom, the end of said head bein curved, and a handle extending from the head; of a lever pivoted to the handle, the curved face of the tongue being concentric with the pivot of the lever, and a forked end to the lever adapted to straddle and swing throughout the length of the tongue the plane of the forked end being transverse to the tongue.
