WlNDOW-SASH FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed November 7,1905. Serial No. 286,206.
To all whom it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. BENNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Window-Sash Fasteners, whereof the following is a specification.
One object of the present invention is to provide an efficient, durable, and reliable window-sash fastener of simple construction, and therefore of comparatively inexpensive cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener that is tantamount to being automatic in its operation.
The invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connectionvwith the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a view illustrating the application of the invention to a window-frame and upper and lower sash of the same. Fig. 2 is an edge view of thekeeper for the upper sash. an edge and elevational view, respectively, of the spring-controlled detents for engaging the keeper. Figs. 5 and 6 are a front and side elevational view, respectively, of the combined sash-lift and detent. Figs. 7 and 8 are a side elevational and bottom plan view of the catch for the sashlift, and Fig. 9 is a detail view of Fig. 7.
In the drawings, a is the window-frame provided with the u per and lower sash b and c. The catch d 1s fastened to the frame a and is adapted to form engagement with thespring-controlled detent e, which, as shown, is part of the sashelift f. This lift forming a detent is pivotally secured to the member g and works in slots therein. In use this memher is screwed or otherwise secured to the lower sash 0. Upon the frame a is secured the member h, vertically slotted to accommodate the'spring-controlled detents '1', and 3'. These detents are mounted upon a common fulcrum and are adapted to lie in the path of the respective sash under spring tension.
The detent j is calculated to engage with the keeper Z, located upon the upright frame of the sash b.
The above-described device would be operated as follows: Assuming the window to be locked, the person wishing to open the same would grasp the sash lift or lifts f and in so doing cause its complemental detent e to be disengaged from the catch (Z. The lower sash being thus released may be pushed upward until its upper extremity comes in contact with and pushes backward through the slots in the member h detent 'Z, thereby causing the detent to be disengaged from the keeper Z. The upper sash is then ready to be moved at will. The locking of the window is automatic. In other words, presuming the upper sash is in its proper place, the moment the lower sash passes its point of contact with the detent Z its complemental detent springs into engagement with its keeper Z. Likewise when the lower sash reaches its lowest osition the detent. e engages with the (ciatc cZ, thus automatically locking the win- Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination in a window-frame and its upper and lower sash mounted therein of a kee or vertically arranged upon the upper sas a rectangular plate secured to the window-frame said plate being provided with slots that extend entirely through the same, a pair of lugs extending rearwardly of the late, a pair of generally rectangular detents aving pivotal relation with said lugs and extending obliquely in parallelism from the rear of said late forward through said slots into the pat of the respective sash, a member located between and carried by the detents and a spring one end of which is secured to the member and the other end thereof to the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HENRY L. BENNER.
