To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Mayan, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash holders, and more particularly to sash holders and locks combined, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive structure, which can be readily adapted to any ordinary form of sash, and which will most effectually hold and lock the sash, at any adjustment.
A further object, is to provide a device of this character with a cam block, against the cam face of which, a roller moves, so as to wedge between the cam face and the frame, to hold the sash, provide improved means for moving the roller and provide improved means for locking the roller in its wedged position.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating in full lines, my improvements in unlocking or releasing position, and in dotted lines, the normal locking or holding position. Figs. 2 and 3, are views in elevation of opposite sides and edges of the device, and Fig. 4, is a view in cross section through the roller 7.
1 represents the upright side member of a window sash, and 2 a window frame, and to the member 1 of the sash my improved device is secured, and will now be described in detail.
3 represents a plate secured by screws 4 to member 1, and a cam block 5 is secured to plate 3 by means of screws 6. A roller 7 is mounted, to move between the cam face 8 of block 5, and the edge of frame 2, so that as the roller moves upward, it will tightly wedge between the cam face 8, and the frame, securely holding the sash against movement. To operate this roller, a lever 9 is provided, and pivoted between its ends upon a screw 10 secured to block 8. 1 secured at its ends to the block 5, and projects across lever 9, so as to strengthen the lever and prevent outward movement. One end of this lever 9 is provided with a slot 11 to receive the trunnion 12 of roller 7. This trunnion 12 constitutes a part of the shaft which is wedged or forced into the roller, and is provided with a disk 13 against the outer face of the roller, disposed between the roller and the lever 9, to take up and prevent undue wear on the roller. The opposite end of the lever 9 is twisted, forming a flat finger hold 14, and a finger hold 15, of angular form is secured to block 5 and by grasping these finger holds 14 and 15 between the fingers, and pressing them toward each other the roller 7 will be moved downward to free the sash, as will be understood.
16 represents a spring, which is secured at one end between finger hold 15 and block 5, and at its other end bows downward around block 5, and bears against roller 7, so as to normally press the roller upward.
Block 5 is made with an opening or bore 17 in which a bolt or plunger 18 is mounted. The upper end of this bolt or plunger is provided with a head 19, and a coil spring 20 is provided around the plunger, between the head 19 and block 5, to normally hold the plunger elevated. The lower end of the plunger is beveled as shown at 21 and is normally held as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, so as to permit free adjustment of the roller 7 up and down. Vhen however, roller 7 is moved upward to a wedging position, plunger 18 may be forced downward and by reason of the beveled edge 21, will tightly wedge the roller 7 between the cam face 8 and frame 2 and when the plunger is pushed down as far as it should go, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, will absolutely prevent any downward movement of the roller and hence securely lock the sash.
The spring 20, above referred to, is not sufiiciently strong to move the plunger upward when the latter is in its depressed position and in frictional engagement with roller 7, and is only of suflicient strength to prevent the plunger from accidentally falling.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangements of parts described without departing from my inven tion and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plate, of a block secured to said plate and having a cam face, said block having an opening therein, of a roller movable against the cam face of said block, a lever pivoted to said block and adapted to move said roller, and a bolt movable in said opening in the block and adapted to be positioned so as to prevent movement of the roller by the lever, a spring normally holding said bolt out of engagement with the roller, and said bolt having a beveled end to contact with the roller.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plate, a block secured to the plate and having a cam face, and said block having an opening therein, of a roller movable against the cam face of said block, a spring normally pressing said roller in one direction, a lever pivoted be tween its ends to said block and having movable connection with said roller at one end, a finger hold at the other end of said lever, a fixed finger hold secured to said block, and a spring held locking bolt, movable in the opening in the block, and adapted to engage the roller to lock the latter against movement.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a window frame and a sash, of a plate secured to the sash, a block secured on said plate and having a cam face adjacent the frame, said block also having an opening therethrough, a roller movable between the cam face of the block and the frame, and adapted to wedge between said block and frame, an outwardly projecting trunnion on said roller, a lever pivoted between its ends to the block, and having a slot to receive the trunnion of the roller, a finger hold on the other end of said lever, a fixed finger hold secured to the block, a spring secured to the block, and exerting upward pressure on the roller, and a normally spring held locking bolt, movable in the opening of the block, and adapted to lock the roller in its highest wedging position.
