"Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of Bronx andState of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is aspecification. V 1
The present invention relates to improvements in window sash fasteners, and more particularly to that type which is secured to the upper rail of the, lower sash of the window and is adapted to bear or bind against some portion, for instance one of the stiles, of the upper sash. I
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved and simple form of.
sash fastener which will lock the two sashes together at any desiredrelative position, so
that the window may be left open a sutiicient distance for ventilation either on the top or at the bottom, or at both, and prevent the lower sash from being pushed farther upward or the top one from being pulled down to a sufiicient extent to enable a person to gain access to the room or house through the window.
Another object of the invention is to produce a sash lock having means which prevents the picking of the look by means of a blade or similar contrivance.
A further object of the invention is to provide'a sash fastener which can be manufactured on a commercial scale, or in otherchanges may be made in the size and pro-.
portion of the several parts and details of construction within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

tion, of the improved fastener, the same belng shown in suitable position relativetothe upper and lower sashes of a window, and the latter being shown in'section; Fig. '2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, certain parts being removed to more clearly show the construction; Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 1 is a view similar to the one shown in Fig. 1, with the sash fastener in its inoperative position.
In the drawings, the upper sash of the window is represented at 10, and the lower sash at 11. To the top of the upper rail of the lower sash is secured by screws, or otherwise, the base plate 1 of the fastener. lVith this base plate may be made integral or there may be attached thereto, in any suitable adapted to come into contact with a channel iron 17 upon the inner surfaceof the upper sash, for instance upon one of its stiles, when said lever is in its operative position (Fig. 1). The eccentricity of the cam-shaped face of the locking lever increases gradually from the lowermost edge 18 of the lever to its uppermost cc ge 19, so as to take a firm grip on the channel lron 17 when brought into contact therewith, and to effectively prevent relative motion of the two sashes.
The lever 15 is provided in front of the spindle l t with an arc-shaped portion 20, having ratchet teeth 21, which are adapted to be engaged by a somewhat resilient pawl 22. This pawl is made in the form of aplate, having a width corresponding to that of the cam-shaped face 16 of the lever 15. The pawl is pivoted at 28 to the upwardly projecting frame portions 13, and is disposed below the locking piece or lever 15. The front portion of the pawl is bent upward, as clearly shown at 24, its free end being adapted to engage with the ratchet teeth 21 and provided with a finger piece 25, for a purpose hereinafter to be described. The outer free end 26 of the pawl projects beyond the outer face of the lower sash 11 into the channel iron 17. A spring 27 causes the upwardly extending portion 241: of the pawl to contact with the lever 15.

The operation of this device is ast'ollows:
Vhen the locking lever is forced into contact with the channel iron 17, its cam shaped face 16 engages with and binds against the said channel iron. As the locking lever is being shifted'from its inopera-i. tive position (Fig. 4:) to its operative position (Fig. 1), the lug 28 causes the pawl to swing around its'pivot 23, and its outer free end 26 to coine into contact with the channel iron 17, thereby closing the gap between the two sashes. At the same time the up wardly extending portion 2% of the pawl engages one of the ratchet teeth 21, depending upon the position of the locking lever. If it is attempted to raise the lower sash,obviou sly'thei'riction between the cam-shaped face of the locking lever and the channel iron will cause rotation of thelocking lever inthe direction of thearrow shown in Fig. 1' of the drawings, and will consequently force the said locking lever against the angleiron and bind the two sashes together in direct proportion to the upward pressure,- owingfto'the eccentricity: of said lever. On the other hand, should it be attempted to 1 'lowerthe upper sash, such movementwill be prevented by :the. pawl 22, in engagement with one of the ratchet teeth 21.
Inasmuch as the pawl abuts against the channel iron,- when the locking lever *is in its operative position (lfi 1), the insertion of a blade-like instrumentwill be eiiectively prevented thereby, so that a picking of the lock becomes impossible. v
The, channel iron 17 has a twofold purpose, towit: First, it presents a proper suri face for contact with the locking lever, and, second, it prevents a sharp-pointed instru ment'from being driven through the stile" of the window sash .for picking the lock in this manner.

When his desired torelease the lock the pawl 22 is disengaged fromthe'r'atcliet teeth oil the locking lever, by taking hold of said pawlby the aid of-the finger piece 25 and forcingit downward against the action of the spring 27. The locking lever can then be swung into the position shown in Fig.4; 'ofthe drawings, thus allowing "treatmementof'bothsashes in both directions. 7

The combination with the upper and lower sashes of a window, of a frame" mounted upon said lower sash, a jlocking lever fulcrumed to said frame having a cam-shaped contacting surface adaptedto bear-against said uppersash, said lever be-Q ing provided with an arc-shaped portion having ratchet teeth, a spring-pressed pawl pivoted to said frame below said locking lever having one of its ends "projecting to--' ward said upper sash and its other end" formed to engage said ratchet teeth, and an extension upon said lever for causing said pawl to swing around its pivot when-said lever .is shifted: to its operative position, thereby.projecting over the gapbetween said sashes and alsofengaging with said ratchet teeth. j
