Description
C.-T. TESSIER. "Improvement in Sash Holdersl No.121,138. V 0h91, Patenfedwwzhwn.
CHARLES T. TESSIER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,138, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. TESSIER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Sash-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being-had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention consists of a T-headed lever, a sliding locking-bolt with a retracting spring, a flexible locking-roller, and a shifting inclined plate in connection with said roller, all arranged in a case adapted to be applied to the stile of the sash, and to lock the sash by the bolt and free it from the flexible roller by a down movement of the lever, the bolt being employed for locking the sash when down; and by an up movement of the lever the bolt is freed so as to be withdrawn by its spring, and the shifting inclined plate behind the iiexible roller is actuated so as to press the roller against the window-frame, so that it will jam between said plate and frame to hold the sash up, all as hereinafter more Afully described.
Figure l is a side elevation of a part of a window and section of the case of the fastener and Window-frame, showing the arrangement of my improved sash-fastener and the position of the parts when locked by the bolt. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the position of the parts when the sash is fastened by the elastic roller; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line a: x, Fig. l.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the small sheet-metal case adapted to be applied to the front or inside of the stile B of the sash, in which case a horizontal bolt, C, is arranged to slide into holes or notches D in the Window-frame or casing to lock the sash, said bolt being thrust out by the part E of the head of a T-lever, F, which comes against the end of said bolt when the lever is turned downward, as represented in Fig. l. Gr is a coiled spring, ar-
ranged on the bolt C to withdraw it from the window-frame back into the case for unlocking the sash when the T-lever F is turned upward. H is an elastic roller, of India rubber or other equivalent substance, placed above the bolt C, to be used for locking or fastening the sash up bybeinng conned in the triangular space I, formed by the face K of the window-frame E, and the oblique plate L at the back of the roller. This plate is pivoted at the upper end, as shown at M, so that the lower end is free to vibrate toward and from the roller H, and the lower end is so arranged relatively1 to the T-lever that when the latter is raised up the arm N, coming against the lower end of said plate, will press it against the roller and the latter against the face K, so that the friction of said roller thereon will cause it to jam between plate L and face K sufficiently to hold the sash. Thus the roller is putin position for action when the bolt is released, and it is released when the bolt is acted upon, and both are released when the T-lever is adjusted to the horizontal position, so that the sash can be moved up and down freely. A spring, O, is applied to plate L in such manner as to swing it away from the roller when said plate is free to move from it. The fastener for holding the sash up, comprising the elastic roller,.shifting plate L, and an elbow-lever, F, may be used independently of the locking-bolt O.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A sash-fastener comprising the sliding bolt C, elastic roller H, shifting plate L, elbow-lever F, and a spring, G, all combined substantially as specified.
2. A sash-fastener comprising the elastic roller H, shifting plate L, and an elbow-lever, F, all substantially as specied.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 9th day of October, 1871. f
.A C. T. TESSIER.
