Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND W. QUINGY, OF LACON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WIM. H. COP?, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Let-ters Patent No. 82,033, dated September 8, 1868.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND W. Quincy, of Lacon, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand- Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in whichl Figure 1 is aside elevation.
rI his invention consists of a sliding handle as a constituent element ot' a hand-wrench; also, in the combination therewith of adjustable jaws, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
To enable those skilled in the art to make anduse my invention, I now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Similar letters in the drawing refer to like parts.
A represents the handle of a monkey-wrench, the same consisting of a metallic bar of suitable length, in each side of which is a longitudinal groove, as seen at a a, the said groove detractin g from the weight of the handle without materially decreasing its strength. Y
b b represent the jaws of my wrench, the same being constructed in the ordinary manner so far as their nipping parts b b are concerned. The said jaws are each provided with a transverse groove, c, of such size as to enable them to be placed upon the handle A and slide freely thereon, the said handle being provided at each end with pins e e e e, one at each side, to prevent the jaws from slipping oft'. The said jaws are also provided near the ends opposite the nipping part and on the other side ot' the handle therefrom with transverse holes, in which are formed screw-threads, and through which passes the bolt h, on which are the right and left screw-threads h h', the right-hand screw passing through one of the jaws b, and the lett-hand screw passing through the other. A wheel, i, with a corrugated rim is formed on the bolt h at its center, by winch the latter may be more easily turned. Recesses 7c 7c, each of a depth equal to a little more than half the width of the wheeli, are formed, one in each jaw b, to enable the nipping part ot' the same to be screwed into contact, notwithstanding the wheel i. The function of the screw-bolt h is, of course, to set the jaws b at any required distance apart, and by the use ot'a right-andleft screw this function can be discharged with twice the quickness attainable from the use of a single screw.
'The advantages derivable from the employlnent of a sliding handle are, rst, that it may be so set with reference to the jaws as to en-v able a double leverage to be employed, as in an auger, whereby a continued rotation ot' the wrench may be eii'ected with but one adjustment to the nut; second, that if there be any obstacle to the rotation of the instrument it may be avoided by sliding the handle out of the way, whereby the necessity ot' removing the wrench at every partial revolution may be done away with.
A set-screw or other equivalent device may be employed, if desired, to conne the jaws to the handle. t
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A sliding handle as a constituent element of a hand-wrench, substantially as described.
