Description

R. S. SANBORN.
Improvement in Ratghet Wrenches.
No. 122,916. PatentedJahQ23, m2.
M; aif wamw UNITED STATES RUFUS S. SANBORN, OF ROCKFORD, ILLDTOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RATCHET-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,916, dated January 23, 1872.
. SPECIFICATION. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BUFUS S. SANBORN, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rotating renches and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved wrench complete. Fig. 2 is a end view, showing a pair of angular jaws. Fig. 3 is a view of the end opposite to that shown in Fig; 2, and presenting a pair of parallel jaws. Fig. 4 is an end view of one of the wrench-heads with the jaws removed. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the parallel jaws and its adj ustingnut. Fig. 6 is a central section through the wrench-heads and their hollow shaft on line a m of Fig. 1.
The same letter marks the same part wherever it occurs.
My invention relates to the construction and operation of the double ratchet-wrench; and consists in the adaptation of double rose-ratchets to the operation ofwrench-heads fixed to a hollow shaft and provided with adj ustable j aws, all in the manner hereinafter fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my improved double rose rotating wrench, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- A marks the hollow shaft, Fig. (i, to which the Wrench-heads B B are fixed, or of which they, or one of them, may form a part. The inner faces of the heads B B are provided with ratchet-teeth a a, which receive corresponding teeth on the outer faces of the inner ratchetavheels (J C.
' attached the handles or levers D D, by which they are operated. The construction of the wheels 0 U and the mode in which they are held steadily in place, while allowed the necessary amount of end play, will be clearly seen in Fig. 6. In this figure, d 61 mark thimbles,
To these wheels 0 G are attached to and forming part of the wheels 0 C, and serving to give them a longer bearing on the shaft A. Outside of these thimbles is a drum or sleeve, 0, which holds them firmly, while allowing them rotation about shaft A and longitudinal play upon it. A spiral spring, S, surrounds the sleeve 6, and serves to keep the wheels 0 G in contact with the wrenchheads B B, respectively. To the wrench-heads are attached adjustable jaws, which slide upon the threaded bars F F in obedience to the adjustingnuts G G I I, which are attached to the jaws. The bars to which the adjustable jaws are attached, may be made part of the heads B B or be removable, as preferred. The jaws may be made of any desired configuration to adapt them to the work for which they are designed. The shaftA is made hollow in order to allow the wrench to be used for turning a nut on or off of a long bolt, the bolt passing through the shaft. In order to center the work both jaws of the wrench at either end of the shaft are made movable.
One end of this wrench it will be observed, turns in a direction opposite to that of the other end, and hence, by reversing the implement, a nut can be turned in either direction, as may be required.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The double rose-ratchets B O and B G, constructed as described, and operated by the levers D D, in combination with the hollow shaft A and the spiral spring S, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the heads B B and the hollow rota-ting shaft A, the adjustable jaws E E and H H, constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Rockford, this 29th day of November, A. D. 1871.
RUFUS S. SANBORN.
