Description
JOHNYJ. ELLIS, 0F AUBURN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 75,399, dated March 10, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENGHES. l
@Ligt rigrhnie rifrtteh in iu iigese tritets nteut mit mating gint nf tige same.
TO ALL `WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. ELLIS, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being` had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this'specilication, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view 'oi' my wrench. l
The nature of my invention Yeonsyistsin the combination of a hammer andwrench, in the manner hereinafter described.
A. represents the handle, which is made hollow, as shown in red lines, forvthe purpose of receiving the shank of thejaw B. The said shank is made to project beyond the rear end of the handle A. On this projecting end a screw is cut, which works in a. female screw, cut through the centre of 'hammer C. D desigria-tes a second jaw of the wrench, and is formed with a slide, E, which is serrated on its outer edge. 'llle slide E passes through a mortise in jaw B, and thus brings the two jaws, and B, parallel with each other. i
It will be observed that thejaw B is constructed with a shoulder, which can be made to press against the end of handle A, by screwing the hammer C tightly against the opposite end of said handle. It will also be seen that the mortise, through B, extends a little further inwards than the shoulder on B, so that when the hammer C is screwedup against the end of handle A, and the jaw B drawn inward, the slide E will be pressed outwards, and the serrated edge of said slide i'orced against the outer end of the mortise in B, and the jaw D, to which the slide E is attached, will be held firmly in position.
In order to-prepare my wrench .for use, all that is required is, first, to unscrew the hammer C, so as to relieve the slide E from the end of the handle, move the slide so as to adapt the jaw D to the size of the nut which isito be operated on, then screw up the hammer C so as to bring the slide E against the endof the handle. This being done, the wrench is ready for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shank B, extending through the handle A, and furnished at one end with a screw-thread, upon which is screwed hammer C, the opposite end of shank B being formed with a jaw, all arranged in combination with jaw D and slide E, substantially for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I atlix my signature in presence 4of two witnesses.
JOHN J. ELLIS.
