To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Cartridges, of which the following is a specification.
Heretofore in the manufacture of cartridges for breech-loading firearms numerous constructions have been devised in attempts am aware none of them has been successful practically; and the object ofmy present invention is toeffect this resultthat is to say, to lubricate a metal-jacketed bullet.
In carrying out my invention I employ, .together with a shell and suitable cap, a bullet having a shoulder near its base adapted to fit within the reduced open end of the shell, providing an annular space surrounding the bullet and between the same and the reduced end of the shell, which annular space is filled with a suitable lubricant, and the edge of the shell is then crimped or turned down into contact with the surface of the bullet, thereby providing a closed chamber or compartment for holding the said lubricating material unexposed to external or atmospheric infiuences.

It will be apparent that with this structure not only is the lubricant protected from all external agencies, but also the powder is protected from the lubricant and all other moisture, and in experimenting proved structure I have found the bullet and arrel to be evenly lubricated, with a resultant reduction of friction and heating and consequent increased efficiency of the firearm.
I claim as my invention 1. A cartridge for small-arms, comprising a shell having a reduced end portion, a bullet having a slightly-enlarged base adapted to fit appreciably within the reduced end of said shell, and a lubricating material filling the annular space between the bullet and reduced end of the shell, and the shoulder formed by the enlarged end of the bullet.
2. A cartridge, comprising a shell having a with this imreduced end portion, a bullet having a slightly-enlarged base adapted to fit appreciably within the reduced end of said shell and a lubricating material filling the annular space between the bullet and reduced end of the shell and the shoulder formed by the enlarged end of the bullet, the edge of said reduced end being rolled down on the surface of the bullet to form a chamber in which said lubricating material is inclosed.
3. A cartridge for small-arms comprising a shell having a reduced end portion, a bullet having a slightly-enlarged base adaptedto fit a preciably within the reduced end of said sl ell, and the free edge of the reduced portion contacting with cating material filling the annular space between the bullet and the reduced end of the hell and the shoulder formed by the enlarged end of the bullet.
