WILLIAM STANLEY MQLEWEE, or YARDLEY, PENNSYLVANIA, AsSieNoR To CARRIE HoWELL- MCLEwEEoE YARDLEY, PENNSYLVANIA,
FOLDING BED,
`view of the bed converted into a seat.
` Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 26, 1904:.l Serial No. 195,892.
Patented May 1, 1906.
` `To all whom it may concern: f
Beit known that I, WILLIAM STANLEY Mc- LEWEE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Yardley, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im )rovcments in Folding Beds, of which the lollewing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a folding bed; andi the object of my invention is to construct a ed in two sections, so that said sections may be used 'eitherjas a bed or turned horizontally and brought side by side to form a seat, or said sections may be separatel to form two independent seats, as desire Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 repre-r sents a plan View of my im roved folding bed when the same Is extende Fig. 2 1s a lan 1g. 3 1s a perspective'view of the bedextended, and
. Figpl` is al perspective view of the bed when converted Into a seat.
Vand legs are In the drawings, A represents a bed conslsting of two sectIons'B and C of equal d1- mensions, each consistlng of a rectangular 1 frame E, formed by 'the end bar e, the side I tion Bof the bed are pivoted to thel corresponding corner-brackets on the section C of the bed. The said corresponding corner-brackets are provided with complementary outwardlyextending projections g and g2, having an aperture formed .n each, through which passes a pin I to hold the said corner-brackets together or to form a hinge, said projections g and gzoccupying di'Il'cI-cnt horizontal planes and interfittingwhen brought together. It
will also be observed that the corner-brackets of one section aline with the brackets of the other when the sections are placed in the bed formation and extend beyond the plane of the sides of said sections, so that the adjacent brackets abut against each other, and thereby enable the ends of the sections to lie close together, thus eliminating an objectionable space therebetween.
By removing the pin I from either of the corner-brackets Gr2 or Gr one side of the bedtions may be then turned upon the remainin pin until said sections are brought side by si e, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to form a seat. By removing both of the ins I the sections of the bed may be place in different positions of the room when two seats are desired instead of one, as shown in the drawings.
J re resents a shelf supported by the end posts and D and the legs D2 and D3, which forms a receptacle for storing the bedclothes when the same are not in use upon the bed. A drawer, if so desired, could'be provided in one or both of the bed-sections in lace of the means shown in the drawings for olding the bedclothes without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- A bed of the class described, comprising a air of sections formed of rectangular frames aving suitable supporting-legs, the inner sides of said sections, when placed in the bed formation, being parallel and having at their res ective ends corner brackets 'rovided wit outwardly-extending aperture projections, the brackets of one section alining with the brackets of theiother when the sections are laced in the bed formation, and extendf ing eyond the plane ofthe sides of said sections, the projections of the contiguous brackets occupying different horizontal planes and inter-fitting when brought together to ferm hinges at opposite sides of the bed, and .pins fitted in said projections to maintain the rojections of the contiguous brackets in loc ed relation, Isaid pins being removable, whereby said sections may be separated at either side of the bed to permit lthein being swung relatively to each other, or entirely separated.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM STANLEY MCLEWEE. Witnesses: f E. D. PATTERSON, M. R. CLEELAND.
