To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL A. SALMON, a subject of Edward VII, King of Great Britain, Emperor of India, &c., (but having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States of America,) residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful portable nail-receptacle, its objects being to provide a device of the class named by which nails deposited therein will be delivered at all times in the same relative position, which may readily be adjusted to deliver variedsized nails, and which being simple in construction may be manufactured at low cost and easily manipulated.
Carpenters, and more especially lathers and shinglers, have heretofore been accustomed when at work to place at certain intervals a number of nails in the mouth, which subsequently are turned, by means of the tongue, and placed between the lips, with the points extending outwardly ready to be used. This habit is not only extremely filthy and injurious to the general health, but often causes diseases of the mouth, for which reasons it is thought that a device which will readily and automatically deliver the nails in the desired position, and consequently obviate employing the mouth, will greatly bene fit those artisans whose trade requires the constant use of nails.
In addition to fulfilling the above-enumerated requirements the use of my device has the advantages of delivering the nails more rapidly than can be done by the mouth and of allowing the use of gloves, which in winter time is of particular value.
I attain my objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2, a top view of same; Fig. 3, an underneath view; Fig. 4, a side view of a modified form, of my device; Fig. 5, an underneath view of same; Fig. 6, a cross-section taken along the line 6 6, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow and Fig. 7, an end elevation looking from a point A, Fig. 2.

My device consists of an oblong receptacle 5, pear-shaped in cross-section, the converg- V vided with ing sides 6 of which terminate in downwardlyextending flanges 7, located a short distance apart and forming the slot 8, through which the nails are delivered, as is shown in broken lines in Figs. 1 and 4. The slot and flanges at one end of the device curve upwardly toward the top of the receptacle and, with the inwardly-trending pointed sides 6, form one of the extremities 9 of the device. The opposite extremity may be formed in a similar manner, (see Figs. at and 5,) making the device equally useful for right and left handed persons, or it may be closed by two overlapping plates 10 and 11, as illustrated in Fig. 7.
A flanged opening 12 in the upper portion of the device affords means for depositing the nails into the receptacle, while the outer extremity of the upper portion of the device, located above the upper extremities of flanges 7, has been omitted to form an opening 13, through which the heads of the nails pass when the latter are brought upwardly through and out of slot 8.
The device is, with the exception of end plates 10 and 11, composed of one piece of thin metal bent to the required shape, its sides converging and its flanged edges brought into close proximity of one another, thus forming the slot 8. The converging sides 6 of the receptacle are held in their relative position by means of transversely disposed screw-bolts 14, one extremity 15 of which is secured to one of the sides, while their oppo site ends 16, protruding through apertures 17 in the opposite side, are threaded and pronuts 18. This arrangement, owing to the resiliency of the metal plate composing the receptacle, permits adjustment of the width of slot 8 to conform with the diameter of the nails it is desired to use.
The receptacle when in use is worn around the waist or neck of the operator within easy reach of the hand and may be secured by means of a suitable strap 19, which passes through loops 20 and 20.
The operation of the device is extremely sim )le, it being, as stated hereinabove, practically automatic in action. The nails having been deposited through opening 12, inside the receptacle 5, are, by reason of the converging sides 6, conducted to the flanged slot 8. The lower nails being the first to reach the slot, will drop therethrough and remain suspended, being supported by their heads resting on the edges of the sides 6. The operator takes the required number of downwardly-protruding nails in between the fingers and slides them along the slot and upwardly through the prow-shaped extremity of the device and the mouth 13 in its upper surface. The moment a nail has been taken out of slot 8 another one will take its place, ready to be removed, and the operation may thus be repeated until all the nails in the receptacle have been used. The upwardlycurving proW-shaped extremity is of great importance, as it insures the proper working of the device. The nails when taken from the box are, in the above-explained manner, brought upwardly above the bulk of the nails contained in the receptacle. This releases them from the weight and contact of the remaining nails and effectively prevents choking at the mouth 13.
It must be understood that although the device, as shown, is preferable, details of construction as well as the arrangement of parts may be altered without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. A portable nail-receptacle having its body of pear shape in cross-section and having a prow-shaped extremity, said receptacle having a slot extending through its lower most portion and upwardly through its prowshaped end and a feed-opening in its upper surface.
2. A portable nail-receptacle made of a single piece of resilient material bent into pear shape in cross-section and having a prow-shaped extremity the edges of the material at the bottom being separated from each other so as to form a slot, said slot curving upwardly along the prow-shaped extremity and a feed-opening in the upper part of the receptacle.
3. A portable nail-receptacle made of a single piece of resilient material bent into pear shape in cross-section and having a prow-shaped extremity, the two edges of the piece of material being separated from each other at the bottom of the receptacle so as to form a slot, said slot extending upwardly along the prow-shaped extremity and means to adjustably retain the said edges in proximity to each other to control the width of the slot.
4. A nail-receptacle having a prow-shaped extremity, a feed-opening in its upper surface, downwardly-converging sides, the lower edges of which extend in close proximity to each other and curve upwardly through said extremity, screw-bolts secured to one of the sides, extending transversely through said receptacle and the opposite side, their protruding ends being provided with nuts.
