Description

No. 817,565. PATBNTED APR. 10, 1906-.
s. HUFPAKER.
WAGON BODY PROTECTOR. APPLIOATION FILED MAY 5. 1905.
SIMPSON HUFFAKER, OF WOODRUFF, UTAH.
WAGON-BODY PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 10, 1906.'
Application filed May 5,1905. Serial No. 258.947.
T0 (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMPSON HUFFAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodruif, in the county of Rich and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Body Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to improvements in devices for protecting the bodies or boxes of wagons when bolster-springs are used under them.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive device of this character which will effectively prevent injury and wear of the wagon-body by reason of its contact with the standards upon the bolsters.
\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagon with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail ver tical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the bearing-sleeves.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the body or box of the wagon, which is supported by springs 2, secured, by means of brackets 3, upon bolsters 4, which are provided upon the usual axles 6 of the wagon. The body 1 is disposed between the usual upright standards 7, secured upon the ends of the bolsters 1, and all friction and wear between the sides of the body and said standards are prevented by means of my improved protecting means. This protecting means consists in providing upon the sides of the body or box 1 adjacent to said standards metallic wear-plates 8 and in pro viding upon the upper portion of the standards friction wheels or rollers 9, which are adapted to engage said plates 8. The plates 8 are screwed, bolted, or otherwise secured upon the sides of the body, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and two of the rollers 9 are preferably provided upon each of the standards. These rollers are disposed upon opposite sides of the standards and are journaled upon reduced portions or bearings 10 of sleeves 11, through which and through openings in the standards 7 are passed bolts 12. These sleeves are placed against the opposite sides of the standards and have a portion of their peripheries cut away, as shown at 13, so that they do not project beyond the inner edges or faces of said standards. Washers 14 and-15 are provided at the ends of the bolt 12, and a nut 16 is provided upon the threaded portion of the latter for the purpose of securing. the bearing-sleeves firmly upon the standard.
The construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that since the peripheries of the rollers project slightly beyond the inner faces or edges of the standards and engage the wear-plates 8 the sides of the body or box 1 will be prevented from being scratched and worn by reason of the movement which the body has upon the supporting-springs It will be impossible for the standards to cut the sides of the wagon-body, and the wagon-body will be permitted to move more easily upon the springs.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do'not wish to limit myself to the precise construction herein set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a wagon-body, a metallic wear-plate secured upon its side, a wagon-standard disposed adjacent to said wear-plate, a bolt passed through said standard, sleeves upon said bolt having reduced bearing portions, friction-rollers upon said bearing portions and engaged with said wearplate, washers upon the ends of said bolt, and a screw-nut upon the threaded end of said bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
