WAGON-BED PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I. FORNWALT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Warrensburg, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements'in Wagon -Bed Protectors, of which the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to the class of carriages and wagons, and more particularly to a wagon box protector and has for an object to provide a device of this character adapted for use upon the rear bolster of a wagon and which will ei'fectively serve to prevent injury to the wagon box incident to the usual vibratory movement of the wagon in its travel across rough roads.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming'a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an end view in elevation showing the application of the invention to a velilcle, the body of the wagon being raised from the bolster. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the protector.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a portion of a vehicle 5 provided with a rear axletl and a bolster 7 therefor. The bolster 7 is provided with the usual vertical standards 8 as shown.
The box 9 of the vehicle is provided upon its under side adjacent'its rear end with a transversely disposed plate 10, having its ends laterally enlarged as shown at 11 and 12 respectively, theenlargements being connected by an elongated portion 13 provided with depending flanges 14k arranged in parallel spaced relation and engaged at opposite sides of the bolster 7. The enlargements l1 and 12 are provided with passages 15 which receive fastening devices 16 engaged with the bottom of the wagon box.
As will be seen from the drawings, the protector may be formed of a metallic plate, the latter being cut inwardly at opposite points upon its sides adjacent to each end as shown at A, the portion at each side between the cuts being bent at right angles to form one of the flanges 14:, these flanges extending in parallel relation as shown.
The side boards 17 and 18 respectively of the wagon box are braced by metallic plates 19 consisting of horizontally disposed portions 20 secured to the bottom of the box by means of the fastening devices 16, and these plates are also provided with vertically disposed portions 22 secured to the side boards by means of fastening devices 23. The wagon box is thus disposed with its side boards between the vertical standards 8 carried by the bolster? and by means of the plate 10 having the flanges 14 disposed at the front and rear faces of the bolster it is obvious that the wagon box will be held from the usual longitudinal movement incident to vibrationsof the wagon in its travel along rough roads.
- What is claimed is:
The combination with a wagon-box, of a metallic plate disposed transversely therebeneath, said plate having a transversely rcduced central portion and correspondingly laterally enlarged end portions, downwardly extending transversely spaced parallel flanges carried by the reduced portion of the plate and arranged for the reception of a wagon bolster therebetween, a pair of angular plates disposed within the wagon box, each with a vertical portion against a side wall of the box and with a horizontal portion against the bottom of the box, said horizontal por tions of the angular plates being disposed above theend portions of the first. named plate, and fastening devices engaged in the horizontal portions of the angular plates and in the end portions of the first named plate and through the bottom of the wagon box.
