DETACHAIBLE BUMPER FOR BOLS'I'ER-SPRINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2, 1 91 7.
Application filed May 22, 1916. serial No. 99,076.
'1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIA P. NoREnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVatertown, in the county of Carver and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful. Improvement in Detachable Bumpers for Bolster-Springs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in vehicle springs and has more especial reference to means forprotecting such springs against damage occasioned by excessive loads carried within the, vehicle or:by sudden jars, as where the Wheels of the vehicle pass over an irregularity in theroad being traveled. I An object of the invention is to provid a device for this purpose, which is simple,
eflic ient and of economical construction and ,which may be easily and quickly positioned upon the bolsteror other portion of the wagon frame to relieve the wagon springs under certain conditions.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter [set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figurel is a front elevation of a wagon bolster having a spring attachment thereon,
and with which my invention is shown app Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bolster supporting my invention, and representing the springs in an assumed position under Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of my invention detached; and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line X-X of'Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing. In the drawings, the reference character A represents one of the bolsters of a wagon.
at the oppositeends of which are disposed suitable side posts or standards B.
Loosely straddling the bolster adjacent each of the standards is a U-shaped stirrup C, the respective ends of each of which are side of the bolster, as clearly shown.
seemed to the ends of springs .D on eitliir t their central portions, the springs are attached by means of a pluralityof U-shaped keepers E and nuts F to a frame comprising a pair of transverse bars G connected together at their ends by means of plates of any desired material, the outer edges. of the plates lying in close proximity to the inner faces ofthe standards by which their movement laterally of the wagon is limited.
By loosely mounting the stirrupsC upon the bolster, it will be appreciated that when the springs are flattened as by a weight car- I ried within the wagon body or by a sudden jolt, the stirrups tend to ride on the surface of the bolster and thusincrease the resili ency and throw of the springs.
Detachably supported upon the upper surface of the bolster A, is an elongated beam in the nature of 'an insert J which is divided at J into two sections a and b.
hinged together at their adjacent ends as. shown atK in Fig. 3, the remote ends of said sections being bifurcated or forked as T at L, so as to straddle the inward edges of the standards whereby the beam or insert is held in position.
Should at any time it be desired to place a r load of such weight in or on the wagon body as would force the springs downwardly to an extent which would endanger and render them liable to be broken, the beam insert J may be arranged on the bolster and prevent the descent of the load above beyond or lower than the plane assumed by the It will there I fore be seen that my improved devioe, while upper surface of such insert.

upwardand downward. passage of the bar J in bent position, one end ofithe rack at a time may readilybej raisedsufliciently to and then downward or upward through the frame. Besides the general advantage of the joint that it makes the bar J easilyre- .insert the bar between itand-the frame G movable'when itsuse isfor a considerable time not required, ills ear to be easily inse ngylsters already mazmlaeiu When the bar J ls app a to the isont bolster of a Vehiele it also rves to prevent upward (1' pie cement o? fine .e. .ng-l olt J as shown in F5 lg. 1.
In accordance Wih the paten; S'eEZlJUlZfiS Iillave described the principles of oporatim' of my invention, together with the apparatus which .l', now consider to represeni; the best embodiment thereof, but I desire all have it understood that the eonstrueelon shown. is only illustrative, and shat the in 'vention can be sealed out by other means and applied fi o uses other than those above set forth Within the scope of the following claims 0 Having described myinvention, whee I-I claim as new and desire to protect by Fatent is l 1, The combination with a bolster having standards at its opposite ends, of sprir gs arranged at the sides of said bolster, stir-- rups conneeting file e11 s of said springs and suspen-dnngthem from the bolster, a iran 3' earried by sald springs, and means detae. ably. mounted on said bols'zer and engage with said standards for 11' ziting the down-- Ward moves gene of said :ilame.
2. Time oonfolnation with bolster ha itig standards at i'is 'opposi' be ends, 0' arranged at file sides of'said hols,
'ting the ends of said springs .10 them from the bolster, a by said springs, and means lied on said bolster and detach- ;ted with said standards for I 1e down-Ward movement of said fix-line,
The combination with a bolster having" Slitllxl? its opposite ends, of springs ange. the sides of said bolster, stifrups eomieeting the ends of said springs and suspendmg them from the bolster, a frame esrmedby sald springs, and a beam L loosely mountedon sald bolster and detachably connected wlnll saldv standards for lnmimg the downward movement of sald frame,
able J we eat m be passed downward and upea l t wugh the skeleton ira'me.
in my whereof, I have sagned my name is specification,
'WILLIAM P. NOBEEN.
