I/IAX DORN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TRANSOM SIDE BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,979, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed May 4, 1903. Serial No. 155,496. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX Donn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Transom Side Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in transom side bearings, and
has for its object to provide a transom side bearing which will be durable and efficient and which may be adjusted to any transom of a car regardless of the angle with the horizontal of that portion of the transom-to which the side bearing is attached, and thus save the cost of making patterns for a new transom side bearing every time the angle of this portion of the transom is changed.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and is a section of car and truck with side bearing in place. Fig. 4 is a plan view of same with car-floor removed.
1 is the body-bolster or transom of the car.
2 is the truck-bolster of the car and has nothing to do with my invention, but merely shows the relative position of the parts.
3 is the truck side bearing and has nothing to do with my invention, but merely shows the relative position of the parts.
Transom side bearings are usually in one piece; but my invention shows it in two parts. The upper part4: is fastened to the transom rigidly by means of the bolts 5, which are countersunk into the lower part of the said part 4. Thelower surface of part 4 represents an arc or circular surface, which rests on a corre-' sponding arc-surface, as shown in drawings in part 6, or the lower half of said transom side bearlng, whlch is held in place by being swung or pivoted to part 4: by means of the bolts 7 Thus the lower part of the said transom side bearing is held rigidly in place by the pivotal bolts 7, and thus the sidebearing may be ad- 1 justed to any transom, whatever the angle of said transom 1 may be, and disposes with the necessity of providing new patterns every time the angle of the transom is different. The bolts 7 carry no strain; but the strain is taken up on the circular surfaces.
It is not intended, neither is it possible, for the curved surfaces to act as a pivot for the bearing, as all the strains act toward the center of the arc of the curved surface, their only use being to adjust the bearing to fit any transom. I
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. The combination in a transom side bearing of two parts, one above the other, the lower part being attached to the upper part so as to rest rigidly on circular or arc surfaces by means of bolts so as to be adjustable to any transom regardless of the angle with the horizontal of that portion of the transom to which the side bearing is attached, and thus avoid having new patterns made for every transom with different angle.
2. The combination of a transom side hearing in two pieces the lower partbeing fastened to the upper part so as to rest rigidly on circular or are surfaces by means of bolts so as to be adjustable to any transom regardless of the angle with the horizontal of that portion of the transom to which the side bearing is attached and means for placing the strain on circular surfaces, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX DORN.
