TRANSOM-PLATE FOR WAGONS.
EPBCIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,707, dated May 11, 1886.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JULIUs WAOHHOLZ and WILLIAM BEHRENS, both of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented aeertain new and useful Improvement in Transom-Plates for WVagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a front elevation of a fore axle and bolster, the hounds being in transverse section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section transverse to the axle at 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an under perspective view of the upper transomplate. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the under transom-plate. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the transoin-plates'on a much larger scale, the same being shown in connection with a king-bolt, and the upper transom-plate being tilted on the lower transonrplate.
Our improvement consists in the described construction of the bearing-faces of the two plates.
A is the axle, B the hounds, and O the lower bolster, which is fast to the axle.
D is the upper bolster, upon which the fore end of the wagon-body is directly supported.
E is the lower transonrplate, which is secured to the under bolster or axle timber by means of bolts F, whose heads may be countersunk in the plate, if desired.

By referring to Fig. 5, which shows the action of the plates, it will be seen that the fulcrumpoint l, on which the upper plate tilts up, is at the outer one, 6", of the standing flanges on the lower plate, so that however much the upper plate may be tilted it is restrained from side movement ,and consequently as the upper transom-plate descends it must drop into its proper position. The extra annular rib e prevents the escape of oil, as it is a standing instead of a descending flange, as heretofore constructed.
We claim 1. The combination of a transom plate formed with a boss, e, inner rib, e, and outer rib, e, and another transom-plate having a central bore, h, receiving the boss, inner rib, h, and outer rib, h, entering the grooves between the first-narned ribs, and bearing-face it" over the first-named outerrib, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of lower transom-plate, E, having bored boss 6 and ribs 6 6 and the upper transom plate, H, having ribs h h, and the lips upon both plates taking over the edges of the bolsters, substantially as set forth.
