TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Beit -known that I, WILLIAM II. SonwALnn, oi the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Combined Sofa and Bed; andy that the following description; taken infconneetion with the accompanying-drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a' full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as Ivclaim,'and desire to havesecured to me by 'Letters Patent.
The-present invention relates more particularly to an improvement on lthe combined divan and bed, secured by and embraced in Letters Patent issued to H. Buehler, on the 11th day of June, A. D. 1867, and consists,
First, in applying to each end of the seat to such divan an arm that is detached or separate from thebach, and in making said arms of such form and height that when the seat of the divan is opened they will serve as legs or supports thereto, thereby dispensing with the swinging legs described in the aforesaid Letters Patent.
Second, in screwing the bolts by which the back is secured in an upright position into the said arms to the seat, where such arms comein contact with thel baclgwhereby the strain upon such bolt-fastenings is much less than when applied to the back, so as to screwinto the seat, as described in the aforesaid Letters Patent,V from 4the fact that the leverage is thereby shortened;
Third, in providing the combined sofa and bed with a foot-board.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my `improvements in combined sofas and beds are illustrated- Figure 1 being an elevation or view oi'one end of' the combined sofa and bed, when folded or closed up, and in shape for use as a sofa, and
Figure 2 a central longitudinal vertical section, with the sofa opened and' adjusted by its several parts, for
use as a bed. .A
Similar letters of reference indicate lil-:e parts.
A, in the drawings, representsl theseat portion of the sofa, supported upon legs, D, one at eaehcrner. Thisseat portion A is made in two parts or sections, marked respectively C and D in the drawings, that, upon the front side of the sofa, are hinged together, so 4as to be opened from andclosed, the one upon the other. The-upper section, C, .is suitably constructed and upholstered for use as a seat, and the lower section, D, is made hollow, orof a box-shape, for holding a mattress, vthat when the sofa is unfolded or opened, as will be hereinafter described, is to be placed upon. the same, as a cushionor bed for reclining or lying upon.
VF', a detachable cover or lid, to box-section D of seat.
H, arms to seat A, one at cach end.l l These arms are fastenedto the seat in any proper manner, but are seperate from the back, I, and in their construction are to he of such a form and height that when the sections of thersofa are opened they will serve as legs or supports to the upper section, dispensing with the use of the legs referred to by letter G, in the Letters Patent hereinbeforereferred to, the advantages of which are obvious.
The back,- I, -is hinged to the lower sectie-nef the seat, so that it can be let down into a horizontal position, or nearly so, where, by means of adjustable legs, J, it is't'o be supported,l these legs being secured by hinges to the back.
K, set or thumb-screws in back, I, at such points that, lwhen screwed into and through the said bac-k, they will enter the arms H of the sofa, at or near such points as said arms are in contact `or in position thereforand thus fasten the back to the said arms, when in an upright position, or nearly so.
L, a board hinged to upper section C of seat, upon its inner side, so that when such section is opened, it can be swung up into an upright position, and serve as a foot-board to the bed then made from the combined sofa.
This board, when swung up, rests upon the upper edge, M, of section C, and by using strap-hinges of suit. able-length, it isobvious that, in connection with its rest upon the edge M, it will he greatly braced and stiiened.
From the above `description of my improvements in a combined sofa 4or divan and bed, it is plain to beseen that many important advantages are secured, andA the utility, practicab'ility, and desirability of the article greatly increased over one made according to the description in the aforesaid Letters Patent.
I am aware of the patent granted to II. Buelller, June 11, 1,867, and therefore disclaim any of the parts 0f the subject-matter of said patent; but Y I The combination and arrangement'of screw-bolts K, back, Larms H, bed A C I), and foot-board L, as
herein represented and described.
WILLIAM I-I. SOHWALBE.
