FIG. 1.
FIG-.- 2.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
- LEMIIEL-L. POPLIN, F ROCKY, MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA.
.TBENCH. i
Specificationbf Letters Patent.
. Patented March 20, 1906.
I Application filed August 11,1905. Serial IIo. 273,803,
To all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that LIJEMUEL L. POPLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rocky Mount, in the county of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Benches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to benches, and has for its object to provide a bench having ex tensible legs to enable it to be raised or lowered to any desired height.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a .bench each leg of which may be adjusted independently o the others, so that the bench can be'made to sit steady when resting on an uneven surface.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a bench so constructed that theznecessary play between the extensions and their guides will not affectthe steadiness of the bench.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangements of part, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in theaccomp anying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended. claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the-claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view-of my improved bench. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
' In thedrawingsfln which like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts, 1 is the. top of the bench, supported by outwardlyextending legs 2, which are strengthened by side braces 3 and end braces4, 5, and 6.
. Braces 5 and 6 are secured in pairs to legs "2,
one on the inner edge and the other on the outer edge. To the inner side of said pairs-of braoes'are secured guide-blocks 7, adapted to hold extension members8 against legs 2. Ex-
tensions 8 are provided on their outer edges with notches 9, which are adapted to be nor-' .vided with radial projections 12, adapted when the shafts are turned to engage and lift said tongues out of engagement with notches 9. On the outer ends of said shafts cranks 13 are provided'to operate the shafts.
The operation ofmy device is as'follows: The extensions 8 being in the position shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to raise or lower the bench the cranks 13'are turned to bring projections 12 in contact with tongues 10, said projections operating to raise said tongues out of engagement with the notches 9. The extensions are raised or lowered to the desired height and the cranks reversed to sitions. Any desired slant may be given the bench by lengthening the legs on one side. By providing the bench with outwardly-extending legs the extensions 8 are held firmly against their guides, thereby furnishing a rigid support for the bench. The greater the wei ght on the benchthe more firmly the extensions are held.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bench comprising a top, supporting-legs rigidly secured thereto, extensions for said legs having notches on their outer edges, lateral braces having guide-blocks securedthereto, said braces being secured to said legs, the said legs, braces and guide-blocks forming guideways for said extensions, and spring-- tongues adapted to engage said notches, said tongues being operated by shafts with radial projections, substantially as described. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
