Patented Dec. 17', 1872.'

Invalid Bedsteads.
mm M5 (UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. SCOTT, OF WINCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND HOWARD B. HUNT, OF ATHOL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN lNVALlD-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,005, dated December 17, 1872.
CAsE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. ScoTT, of
.Winchester, in the county of Cheshire and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Invalid-Bedstead, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is v a vertical longitudinal section of my improved invalid-bedstead, the line 0 c, Fig. 2, indicatthe shafts the racks are raised or lowered, andwith them the adjustable frame.
A in the drawing isthe bedstead proper;
' B, the vertically-adjustable frame of the same, forming the direct support for the invalid. C
,C are vertical racks arranged within the corners of the bedstead under the corners of the frame B. D D are two transverse shafts hung in the ends of the bedstead, respectively, and carrying pinions a a which gear into the racks C. By means of pawls b, which are pivoted to the bedstead, and ratchet-wheels 01 mounted upon the shafts D, the latter can be locked to sustain the racks and frame B in any suitable position.
By turning the shafts D D the racks can be raised and lowered at pleasure, and with them the frame B. The turning of the shafts D is effected either by means of crank-handles applied to their ends or by gear-connection with a longitudinal shaft that may be hung in the bedstead and turned by hand, The rack-support for the frame A is very simple and easily applied, and can be easily removed. or lowered out of the way when the frame B is' no longer to be used or adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A The racks C C combined with the pinions a and shafts D', and with the adjustable frame B of an invalid-bedstead, substantially as herein shown and described.
HENRY A. SCOTT.
