Letters Patent lV'o.A 81,538, dated August 25, 1868.l
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIELD'POR CARRIAGE-CURTAIN :BUTron-Hoteis` @Ligt Srlgehli rccmh te in4 time `time attnt zum' mating mit uf tigt stmt.
CONOERM, I Be it known that I, W. G. QUEAL, of Otago, Otsego county, State of New York, (recently of Oxford,
-Chenango county, New York,) have inventeda new and improved Shield for Carriage-Curtain Button-Holes; andI -do hereby declareiand make known that the following is al full and exact description 'thereoi`, refereee -b'eing'had to the accompanying drawings,.and to the letters ofreferenee marked thereon.
Y' The nature of my invention consists of a metal shield, made in two parts, A and B, Figure 1, attached through the curtain,'o'ver the button-hole, to a `flexible or`metallic hack, the attachment of said shield made either by lips turned from the edges of the shield, or by a hinge 4of the upper part of the same; the clirtain consisting of either cloth or leather, as deemed desirable.
To -enable'others skilled'in the art to' make and use my invention, I willproceed to describe its construction and operation, I
4The' shield is placed over the buttonhole,'on the outside of the curtain, and is fastened in such a. Way that the shieldopens outwardly, as showlfin Figure 2. When the button is pressed against it, and when the button is through on the outside, the shield closes, and is lockedv perfectly secure, as seen in No. 2, fig. 1, until it is necessary to unbutton or unlock it, which is `readily done by turning one part of the shield outwardly, and the 'button is then `pressed down,` and passes out of the shield,
v Figure 3 is a sectional view 'of the curtain when in position, A being the upper half and the lower half of the shield. I
d a a are theparts or lips ofthe shield, that pass. through the curtain and clincli ou the inside of the flexible or metallic back. The shield can be made of any kind of metal, and is found to he vastly superiorvto the old mode Ofmaking holes directly inthe curtain without such shield.
v Claim.
What I claim as newv nnd'usei'ul, and desire to secure hy Letters PatentJ is.
. The above-described combination of shields A and B, with iiexible or metallic back,'attached tothe button- Vholes of carriage-curtains, for theirpreservation, and for security of fastening, in the manner and. for the purl Apose as substantially set forth and described.`
