Description

PATBNTED MAR. 13, 1906. G. MONBT-TI. WHIP STOCK. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 1.4, 1905.
Quorum I l minnow lo aZZ whom if may concern:
' v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Be it known that I, GIOVANNI MONETTI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Taylorville, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Stocks and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
-My invention relates to improvements in whips, and more particularly to a twisted whip-stock made ofwood or'other fibrous material.
The object of the invention is to provide a flexible and durable Whip-stock of this character which may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
nally to form four thongs and With the above and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arran ement of parts, as will be hereinafter descri ed and claimed. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a stock or piece of wood from which one of my improved twisted whip-stocks is to be made. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing it dressed so that it is square in cross-section. Fi 3 is-a similar view showing the stock sp it longitudia handle portion. FIg. 4 is a view showing the four 4 thongs after they have been dressed preparatory to twisting them. Fig; 5 is a viewshowing the whip-stock after its thongs have been twisted, portions of the'outer ends of the thongs being untWistedto more clearly illustrate the construction; and Fig. 6 is a view showing a finished whip-stock with its outer end knotted to illustrate its flexibility and with a flexible lash securedto said end.
In practicing my invention I take a piece of wood 1 of the proper length and size in cross-section and dress the same so as. to form the square or rectangular strip shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. I then split the strip longitudinally from one of its ends to a point adjacent to. its opposite end, so as to form two or more thongs 2 and a handle portion 3. As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the strip is split so as to form four thongs, which are then tapered from their inner to their outer ends and rounded, as seen in Fig. 4 of the Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 14,1905. Serial No. 274,143.
Patented March 13, 1906.
drawings. Then by the use of a machine or I by hand these finished or dressed thongs are twisted while heated by steam orotherwise treated, so that they assume the form of a I twisted rope, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. If desired, I may place in the center of the twisted portion of the stock a core 8 in the form of a small round stick or switch.
- The twisting of the thongs renders the stock very flexible, as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 6 of the drawings, in which the outer portion of the stock is twisted into a knot.
The end of the stock may be finished in any desired manner, and, if desired, a lash 9 may be secured thereto The handle portion 3 of the stock may also be finished in any suitable or desired manner.
The manner of constructing and the advanta es of my improved twisted whip-stock 'wi 1 be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be understood that the invention may be applied to whips of any style and character, that any number of thongs may be formed, and that they may be twisted in either direction. It will also be understood that while I have shown and described one of the preferred embodiments of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise showing herein setforth, since various changes in the form, proportion, and'the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. Awhip-stock of fibrous material having a plurality. of thongs at one end, integral therewith and twisted together. 2. A whip-stock of fibrous material comprising a handle portion, and thongs at one end thereof, integral therewith and twisted together. N In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two'subscribing wit- 10o nesses.
