Description

T. ENOMOTO.
TOY HOOP.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 17. I918- Patented July 9, 1918.
INVENTOR 775220222050 I WITNESSES A TTORNE Y8 TATSUTARO ENOMOTO, OF WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
TOY HOOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1918.
Application filed January 17, 1918. Serial No. 212,293.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TATSUTARO ENOMOTO, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and a resident of VEatsonville, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Toy Hoop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a toy hoop adapt ed to be trundled by the use of a propelling stick.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved toy hoop having elasticity, strength and durability SIIPEI'lOIKtO the ordinary hoop and to provide a trundling stick to engage and propel the hoop in an effective manner.
To attain the stated object use is made of a single strip of the outer skin of bamboo, the strip being wrapped spirally about itself throughout the hoop into a plurality of layers, with the respective layers so arranged that the ends of the strip are securely clamped between the layers and a gesirable total effective width is given to the cop.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification inwhich similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a toy hoop formed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on the line 2--2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 represents side elevations at right angles to each other of the trundling stick employed with the hoop;
Fig. 4 is an edge view of the hoop;
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the hoop on a reduced scale showing the manner of employing the stick to trundle the hoop;
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a trundling stick formed of bamboo.
In producing a hoop in accordance with my invention a single strip of the outer skin of bamboo is utilized and the same is given a hoop form by twisting or wrapping the strip spirally about itself entirely throughout the hoop and in a manner to produce in effect a plurality of layers. The hoop at any given point or transverse line thereon will present a cross section composed of an intermediate layer 10, an outer layer 11, and an inner layer 12, giving at all points about the hoop an effective total Width approximating at least that of two convolutions of the strip and the total width thus produced is in any case very much greater than the width of the strip from which the spiral hoop is composed.
The hoop thus produced possesses a substantial body and superior resiliency and strength and, by reason of its resilient and substantial body, lends itself to racing contests for example, while under complete control of the trundling stick, it being known that the ordinary unsubstantial toy hoop is difficult of control under high speed.-
In connection with the hoop a trundling stick 13 is employed having a fork 14 at the front end thereof. The stick may be made of any suitable material such as bamboo or of a combination of wood and metal, the illustrated form comprising an elongated wooden handle or body part and a separate fork having the shank 15 thereof inserted in the handle.
The stick and hoop are employed as indicated in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 6 is shown a stick 13 made of bamboo including the fork 15*.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A toy hoop composed of a single stri of the outer portion or skin of barn o0, wrapped spirally about itself throughout the hoop into a plurality of layers, the ends of the strip being clamped between the respective layers.
