Description

Aug. 4, 1925.
K.. NAKAMURA RACKET Filed July 21, 1921 Zlwuenfot Patented Aug. l, 1925.
KEIJIRO NAKAIVIURA, F TOKYO, JAPAN.
BASKET.
Application filed July 21,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KnIJIno NAKAMURA,
a subject of theEmperor of Japan, residing at No. 13 Gokencho, Kanda-ku, Tokyo, Japan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rackets for use in tennis and like, games,
wherein strips of hide or skin, preferably untanned, are interposed between and glued to the handle-body and the frame of the racket to be united together, and within the handle portion a groove extending full width thereof is formed, into which a. core plate of untanned hide or skin is inserted and glued.
The object of the invention is to provide a racket which is most durable in construction, and in which the united parts are not affected by any weather, and any strain and breakage is prevented as far as possible.
In the annexed drawings, Fig. 1 is a front view of a racket according to my invention. r Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig.
3 is a detail .section. Fig. 4 is a cross section along lines A-B in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail viewof the frame and strips of hide.
Similar references refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a handlebody with its upper portion triangularshaped, said triangle having concave sides. '2 is astrip of wood bent into a somewhat elliptical hoop a, each end of which extends downwardly along the side of the body 1. Interposed between and glued to said frame 2 and the body 1 are thin strips of hide, preferably untanned. Each strip 3 extends upwardly to the predetermined distance along the inner side of the hoop a and is glued thereto. The frame 2 is also provided with similar strips of hide I glued to its outer sides at the curved portions between the hoop and the handle portion. lVithin said handle portion composed of the body 1, frame 2 and strips of hide 3, are formed grooves h, c, and (Z, which form one groove extending the full width of the handle portion. Upper end of said groove is upwardly diverged. (Figs. 3 and 5). In said groove a correspondingly shaped core plate 5 composed of hide, preferably untanned, is insorted and glued thereto, as shown in Figs.
55 2 and 3. From the latter it will be seen that the oppositely arranged inclined surfaces 1921. Serial No. 486,507.
at the upper end of the core plate 5 will serve to press the frame 2 and strips 3 inwardly against the body 1.
On the top of the body 1 a strip of hide 6 is glued, which extends at each end along the strips 3 on the. inner side of the hoop a, and is superposed upon and glued to the same. Between the hoop a and the handle portion, the frame 2 and body 1 are covered by a thin plate 7 of leather or hide. Cords 8 are wound around the frame 2 at suitable points to maintain the strips of hide 3, 4 and 6 in good engagement with the frame. Across the hoop a, a net work 9 of cord or catgut is stretched in usual manner.
The racket constructed in the manner described according to my invention has many advantages, that the united parts will not be affected by any weather and there is not produced any strain, that the frame 2 is prevented from breaking at the point be tween the hoop a and the handle portion, due to the strong elasticity of the strips of hide incorporated. Moreover, as already stated, the frame 2 is firmly pressed against the body 1 by the inclined surface at the top of the core plate 5, whereby the body 1, strips 3 and frame 2 are united together in most reliable manner.
What I claim is 1. An improved racket comprising a handle-body and a frame, strips of hard hide or skin interposed between and glued to the handle-body and frame and uniting the same, a handle portion having a groove extending the full width thereof, and a core plate of hard hide or skin inserted and glued in said groove.
2. An improved racket comprising a handle-body and a frame, strips of hard hide or skin interposed between and glued to the handle-body and frame and uniting the same, a handle portion having a groove extending the full width thereof, and a core plate of hard hide or skin inserted and glued in said groove, said handle having its uppermost portion diverging upwardly, and a correspondingly shaped core plate of hard hide or skin inserted and glued in said portion. 1
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
