Description

@uitrit tstsatwt @Hirn ALMA BEDFORD; 0F coLDWATnn, MICHIGAN.
Letters Patent No. 31,464, dated August 25, 186s.
IMPROVED TOOLv FOR GUTIING HOLES IN CLOTH OR LEATHER PORBlIIGKLE--TONGrUIlS,
ttetlnhult nicht tu in ttese-ttmttmt mit matting nrt tf the tants;
Be it known that I, ALMA BEDFORD,'of the city of Coldwater, county of Branch, and State of' Michigan, have inventeda Tool for Cutting Holes in Leather, to Receive Buckle-Tongues, and composed of a knife Iand lock, attached to `a punchror spring hand-punch and Ildo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawing, making part of this specificationi i I I 1 Figure 1 being a perspective view. 1 t v- Figure 2 being a view of thel upper side, with a lock and knife attached, of a Aspring hand-punch.
Figure 3 being a view of the knife.
Figure 4, a view of a strap ready for stitching, the tool having been used thereon.
Figure 5, a view of the lock. Y l
' In `constructing my'tool forcutting oblong holes inA leather or cloth,rfor receiving the tongues ofbuckles, I
make an instrument, D, inthe formof a common spring hand-punch, as shown in iig. 1. The upper short arm `l?, I provide, with a hole, F, and also with a locking-device, G, as shown in gs. 1,.,2, and 5, having a shank, C,
for pivoting it to the arm E, so as to allow it to'be turned, a handle, H, for turning it, and a plate, B, for locking into the shank of the cutting-tool. My cutting-tool J; I construct asr clearly shown in g. 3, and'insert it in the hole F, andlock it in place with Vthe plate I, as shown in fig. 1. o
- In the lower short arm, K, I make, a m'ortiseQin which Iinsert a soft metal or wooden piece, A, for the cuttingtoo'l J to strike againsnas shown in fig; l, Y l
It is obvious that tools of diii'erent sizes may be used forcutting di'erentlsized holes. The movement of the locking-device is clearly shown-in fig. 1. l .i
In operating my implement, I first insert the sized tool desired to be used, then bend: the cloth or leather strap that isto be cut, and place the fold onv the blockA, when, by-pressing thehandles together, an oblong hole will be made, through which the-tongue ofl the buckl'elcan he passed, as jihown clearly in iig. 4;. v
In this Way, I ani-able to'rnake a cheap, convenient, and suitable tool` for cutting oblong holes in leather or cloth, to receive buckle-tongues. A
Havinghus described my invention, what I claim, is.- Y
A tool for cutting holes in leather or cloth, to receive buckle-tongues, consisting of the cutting-tool J and locking-device Gr, constructed audarrangcd to' operate substantially as herein described.
I u v ALMA. BEDFORD.
