Application fledJune 8, 191.4; i Serial No. 843,718,
T0 @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. ANDERSON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented ycertain .new and useful Improvements in Punches; and I do declare the following to kbe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilledy in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements 1n punches, and the primary object thereof is to provide a punch in which the entire body is formed of a single blank of material folded about the operative parts to produce the finished article.
A further object of thel invention is to provide a punch in which means is provided for rigidly holding a selected one of a series of punches at one end of and in line with the body so that by hammering upon the opposite end of the body the material acted upon be easily and quickly punched.
Still further objects of the invention are to provide simple means incorporated within the body to hold the punch rigid in selected position; to improve the construction and reduce cost of production of the entire structure, and to generally simplify punches of the hand type by relating and coniining all of the parts within a relatively small sphere.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side eleva-` tion partly broken away and in section of a punch constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view, also partly broken away and in section; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the body is formed; and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4l-4f of Fig. 1.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a blank 1, of sheet metal, shown in Fig. 3 ofy the drawings, is employed, which blank is provided with a pair of spaced extensions or arms 2 provided with openings 3 adjacent their free ends. The opposite sides of the blank 1, are provided with cut-out now to be set forth. The blank is shaped by bending same to provide a hollow handle 5 and a pair of opposite arms which the extensions 2 provide, the cut-out parts 4, 4f, conjointly forming a slot 6. Just prior to the arms being bent into the final position an interior` seat for parts et for a purpose l shownin Figs. 1 and of the drawings, the punch hub is alined with the openings l3 whereby upon the arms being bent into final position, the latter will'provide journals for the respective ends of the punch hub, as is apparent from Fig. 2. The hub 7 Patented oct. zo, 191e.
rso
Carries a y'series of punches 8 of varying diameters. The free or outer end of thehandle is preferably contracted and rounded as shown in Figs. l, and 2, to provide a strong, rigid and effective blows ofthe hammer, and further to lform the outer end of a coil latter has its inner end latch or `lock block 11. The block 11, slides within the hollow interior of thehandle and is provided with a pin 12 which extends through slot 6, and by means of which the block may be manually depressed or moved against the tension of the spring 10. A flared opening 12 is formed in the front end face of the block 11 so as to receive therein any ofthe various punches which latter as sessed of varying diameters.
Particular attention is called tothe fact that a device constructed in accordance with this invention can be most economically and quickly made and assembled, and since all of the parts are compactly related, a simple and neat tool is produced which is handy and serviceable. In addition by use of a short handle, lesspower is required in hammering to effect cutting action-of the punch.
In Operation, the latch block is released and the hub rotated to bring the selected punch in line with the handle, kwhereupon the block is released and engages one of thepunches which registers therewith and holds the entire hub spring 10 ywhich bearing against a against rotation. The
anvil face 9 to receive the y punch is then engagedwith the leather or i other material and `blows ofl a hammer are then delivered to the end 9 of the handle to drive the punch through thematerial.
What is claimedis:
1. In a hand punch, a body formed a sheet metal blankwhichis shaped 'and folded into ahollow handle havinga slot and contracted free end which latter is rounded, and a pair of opposite arms at the opposite end of the blank which arms are provided with Openings and disposed in spaced 'rela' tion, a multi-punch carrying hub havingits ends disposed in saidopenings, a coil spring in the handle abutting theeontracted free end thereof, a latch block against which the spring bears, and a pin on the block eX- tending through the slot of the handle, said block having an opening to receive any of the punches and the contracted end ofithe handle forming an anvil Jface for hammering thereon.
2. In a tool, a hollow handle having a contracted end portion toiiorni an anvil face at.
one 'end thereof and an interior seat, a slidable spring pressed latch in the handle the spring of which engages in said seat, and a rotatable Work engaging means at the opposite end of the handle for engagement with the latch.
3. In a tool, a hollow body having apertured arms at one end and having its opposite end contracted to forni an outer anvil face and an interior seat, a rotatable Workengaging element arranged in the apertures of the arms, and spring pressed locking lneans for the element arranged on the interior of the body and having the spring thereof engaged at one end with said in- Aterior seat.
