Description
- B TTON H E CU R 1 71 0 0 Pmm'rm JUL1818'71 ,Mmwssz's: INVENTOR- Q/mwm I w l i UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM A. MORSE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification forming part of Letters Paten t No. 117,100, dated July 18, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MORSE, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Case or Holder for Holding a Button-Hole (Jutter while not in use, and it is peculiarly adapted to'facilitate the use of this class of cutters by providing a spring-clasp and gauge or guide for the cutter, by the use of which button-holes may be cut perfectly true, which cannot easily be done with this kind of a cutter without the use of my invention.
I do hereby declare the following specification to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view, showing my improved holder with the knife or cutter in its case. Fig. 2 is a back or opposite view ofthe same. Fig. 3 shows the cutter and spring-clasp with knife-gauges or guides in operation or use. Fig. 4 is the knife or cutter best adapted for use with my improvement.
The case or holder 0 O and bent spring D D I make from one piece of sheet metal, cut in a die to a suitable size and form. Sheet brass or common tin may be used for this purpose. I then cut in suitable dies the slots or knife-gauges a a, and stamp on the same a graduated scale, as shown at Figs. 1 and 3. I then place the blank in a die, worked by a screw-press, and form up theparallel sides 0 O and turn them over sufficiently far to engage the knife F with friction enough to retain it in its place while not in use. It may thus be carried in the pocket or otherwise with safety. I bend the opposite end of the blank over parallel with the sides 0 G, and thus form a U-shaped spring with slots or knife-guides a a exactly opposite each other. These slots must be cut only wide enough to admit the thickness of the knife or button-hole cutter. This will insure a clean and perfectly straight out or buttonhole in the cloth. The bent spring D D I leave rounded at its bent end and a space between its opposite sides sufficient to admit the cloth to be out. The cutter F should be made of thin steel and finely finished, with one cutting-edge and a sharp point.
The operation of my invention is shown at Fig. 3. The cloth H is held firm by clamping tightly with the hand the spring D D, when the knife F is pushed through the guide-slots a at until the required-sized button-hole is indicated by the graduated scale.
Having th us fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bent U-shaped spring D D, provided with cutter-guiding slots at a, substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
2. The buttonhole-cutting knife F, metallic reception-case or holder 0 C, U-shaped springs D D provided with cutter-guides or slots at a, and graduated scale, in combination, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
WM. A. MORSE.
