Description

IMPROVED BOOT-TREE AND STRETGHBR.
lfitte tlghtltnftttrh fait time Enters @that rmt making satt df its smite.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I, JACOB BCHTEL, of Roxbury, in the county ofFranklin, and in the State of Pennsyl Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot-'frees and Stretehers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereoi, reference being had to the occompanyingdrawings, l'and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v y
The nature of'my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of uboot-tree, by which a boot can be stretched to its utmost capacity, and a'perfectly neat'and tight-fitting boot obtained. v
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and-use my invention,`[will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to `the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in.
Figure 1 isfront view of the hnckgpart ofthe boot-tree.
Figure 2 is a side sectional elevation. v
Figure-3 is a rear view .of the frontdpart, and l Figure 4 is a bottom view ofthe last.
A represents the hack part, and B the front part of a boot-tree, to which latter the last C is secured.
The inner or front side o'f the part .A has a perpendicular groove along its entirelength, and two recesses are sunk into it, as shown in fig. 2', into which metal blocks D D are placed, said blocks being pivoted in the sides of said recesses. I l
In the outer end of the blocks D D, arc small rollers E E, and the inn er ends form a tongue, pointing inwards and upwards. A screw-rod, a, passes from the top of the part A, through aslot in the tongue of the upper block D, and. through that part of the tree A that i s between the two recesses. It is further so arranged with a projection, C, that this'projection will strike the upper block at the same time that the end of said screw a strikes the lower block, thus forcing the ends with the rollers E E, outward at the-same time, and with equal force when turned hy'a crankv applied tothe top thereof.
The rearv side of the front 'part B is provided with metal plates d opposite the recesses in the part A, against-which plates the rollers E E strike when forced outwards,-as described. It has also projections or slots e e, whioh t'into the groove on the part A, so that they cannot slide apart sideways..
The lower end of the part B is slotted, as seen in fig. 3, and the last C is provided with a corresponding tongue, which slides' into said slot. The last is also made in two parts, as shown in fig. 2, which two parte are attached'together by screws These'serews are turned by a key from the bottom, so that the same last may answer for several different-sized boots. I
It will thus be seen that, by first inserting the front part B, with last C, into a boot, then the back part A, that, by turning the scr-ew a, the-blgcks D D and rollers E E force the two parts A and B apart, stretching the boot as much as may be desired.
In case the blocks D D should not ,extend the parts A and B far enough,` slides .are put in between them, which slides ure groovcd on one side, `and on the pther provided with plates and projections, to correspond with the inner suri'nces ofthe two parts A and B. I
Having thus. 'ully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A boot-tree, when made in two parts, one of which lis provided with blocks and rollers worked by a screw, for the purpose of pressing them outward, suhstantiallyvas and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The hist C, constructed'as described, jin two parts, adjusted by screws, and provided with a tongue fitting into a slot `on the lower end of the front part of the boot-treo, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I `claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 7th' day of July, 1868.
' JACOB BECHTEL.
